In 1993, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that 18% of Australians have a disability while 14% of Australians are handicapped. Therefore, disability policies have been established in Australia in order to preserve the rights of disabled people.
The Disability Advisory Council of Australia (DACA) was set up in 1983. The primary role of DACA was to provide advisory services to Commonwealth Government regarding all aspects of the policies which are formulated in the interest of disabled people.
The response to the results of the 1983 Review of Handicapped programs was The Disability Services Act, of 1986. It provided a legal basis for the organizations for funding and provide services to disabled people. This Act was replaced by Handicapped Persons Assistance Act, which was eradicated.

The Disability Services Act, of 1986 offered a wider range of services than HPAA, and each type of service was very broadly defined. Services in The Disability Services Act included:
 Provide support for accommodation
 Provide relief care
 Provide support for employment
 Provide training and placement
 Provide advisory, counseling, and information services
 Provide assessment to individual & program planning

A professional Paramedic body in Australia is Paramedics Australasia (PA). It’s a college for ambulance personnel and paramedics. Paramedic representative bodies vary from state to state. Ambulance Employees of Australia (AEA) is the union for paramedics in Australia which presents paramedics services from Victoria, Western Australia, and Queensland.
