Psychological construct in media is defined as the build-up of ideas based on character and their description; this is usually in the attempt to understand certain traits in human beings. This conclusion of one's character is usually drawn from the observation of the character. In this case, sequential development is what I chose to describe a particular media which is very popular amongst many individuals in the world- Crash. Sequential development is described as the subsequent build-up of ideas in the story in order to describe the character and portray personality, theme, and or subject matter. This particular construct is mostly evident in the movie, as the story develops and portrays characters of different personalities both good and evil (Herbert 214).
The film is mostly about social and racial bias in Los Angeles, in the storyline, a number of characters interweave in just two days in Los Angeles, they include a black LAPD detective who had been estranged from, his younger brother who is a criminal in Los Angeles and his gang associate together with a white District Attorney and his spoilt wife, alongside a yet racist white police officer who does not like his partner for he is young. There is also an African American Hollywood director who has to cope with the police, a Hispanic locksmith, and his child (Herbert 103).
The film starts when the detectives are involved in an accident, that is Graham and Ria, Kim Lee and Ria had a verbal exchange which was highly racial then, Graham left the car to investigate the crime scene. A day prior to this incident Farhad and his daughter had been shopping for ammunition. This deal went sour when the racially biased shopkeeper decided to escort him out of his shop after a slight misunderstanding. Almost at the same time as these incidences the District Attorney and his pampered and spoilt wife were being carjacked by Bridges and Peter. Later the detectives arrive at the scene there was a shoot and the survival shooter was a white male who was also an undercover police officer. The dead shooter was a black male who was an officer as well. Afterward, DanielRuiz who is the locksmith described earlier is changing locks. He overhears Jeans’ frustrations about the black men who did not say anything in the fear of being tagged racist.
Detectives John Ryan and Hanson pull over to a navigator similar to the one earlier despite the loopholes in the descriptions. They ordered the couple out of the vehicle, Cameron and Christine. Cameron was not argumentative but Christine was, then Christine was molested by the officer who pretended he was administering a pat down in search of weapons. Cameron was intimidated and did not do anything he did nothing about it and when Ryan was done he let them go without even administering a parking ticket. The following day Hanson tried to talk his boss into switching partners. Dixon tells him that the move was going to cost them a great deal and was not wise thus he should just opt for a one-man car instead. And claim that the request is due to his flatulence which is completely out of control. Cameron on the hand, storms out of the house after arguing with Christine since he did nothing during the molestation. This film had a number of other incidents where the racial biased did things for their own gains. The film ends with characters still hulling racial insults at one another (Herbert 103).
The construct developed in this story is sequential in the sense that all characters portrayed some level of racism in all instances. These instances developed as a result of other instances which is why the characters well brought out the theme of racism. This situation is well very common in real-life situations as people’s decisions and opinions are usually mostly based on skin color. Hanson at some point in the film wanted to be switched because he was racist but instead he, in the end, opted for a different solution to his problem so that he could cover up for his racism. Some critics who have researched the film point out that the movie is biased against Asians as it brings out their various stereotypes pointing out that some characters could have been downsized for instance the Asian who was knocked out when the detectives were talking but this was characteristic of sequential development. Another said that this was an intricate crime drama movie (Herbert 103).
This film highlighted the evils in society which include racial bias amongst many others. The construct just acted as a path to highlighting some of this evil. This is good as it gives people insight into how to handle issues of racism differently. It is a learning experience for people on how to be free-spirited and not racist. Some crimes like carjacking and sexual molestation as a result of this construct should be stopped amongst members of society and support should be provided to those affected (Herbert 103).
