Introduction The importance of editing style using the film Crash will be discussed in this essay. The main aim of this essay is to demonstrate the importance of editing that can make the movie more interesting. The argument that is raised by me is what would have been the effect of the film if the editing part was a failure? To understand that a plot of the storyline is essential and that has been described in the sentences below. The main advantage of the editing was that the prejudices were real though the characters were not. The editing was able to give the advantage that the tensions and raw emotions and the conflicting behaviors were being able to transform to the viewers. The diversity of the film was being able to translate to screen due to the editing. What good is a story and film if it is not properly edited? The role of editors in the in the dark room gets the variation and the basic thing about editing is that a job will begin as soon as the director has shot enough footage that will resemble a scene and that involves the selection of shots, the angles that will make the shot look more beautiful and that will help in the making of completed movie. The editor should have the knowledge in understanding when to cut away from one performer and that means physical action from one to another. The role of the editor is to decide what should reach the audience at the end. There can be elimination of lines and rearranging of lines, there can be exchange of sequences that can be done in consultation with director and that can increase the freshness of the film. Mark Harris has stated that the editing style that has been used in the film Crash has been successful in changing the look of the story, the pace at which the narration unfolds and the relative weight that has been given to the performance related with story. Development Crash has been a multi plot character in Hollywood film that has won numerous awards and that includes the academy award for the best motion picture of the year, the best screenplay written originally for the screen and best achievement in editing in the year 2005.The story is well placed in the sense that everything that the characters do in the film and the situations in which they find themselves as they interact with each one another and the resulting from racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination and misunderstanding. The story takes place in less than two day. The narrative is organized around the progressive development of variety of situations that relates to the theme of the film. The film Crash was adhering to the consistency factor in editing and that has been established by the fact of continuity in editing and that has helped the audience to follow the film effortlessly. This helps the smooth transition from the one plot to another and that has been made by eliding the sound of the action and that has been seen also at the sound at the end of the film. The film starts with different plotline and ends with different plotline. The editing of the film crash has been the influential factor in the clash of coincenditial meetings. The movie that works on the principle that in everyone there is good and bad works wonders with good editing. The film has been good enough to break down the stereotypes and the barrage of brilliant scenes has been made possible by good editing. The little girl that has been rescuing the father and the freeing of Asians has been made memorable by good editing Alfred Hitchcock has once said that film editing is an art that has to be done in such a way that the boring parts are removed and it has been accepted by many famous directors. The “Citizen Kane” has been directed by Orson Wells and it is believed that the director had watched the John Fords classic more than four times before attempting a film. The first five James Bond films can be said as the best editing lessons that a novice can get and that includes Dr No, Goldfinger, You only live twice and so on. These films form the base for what is good editing. It is no surprise that the editing that has been used in Crash can be a lesson for future editors. The use of identification, parallel plots, reaction shots, point-of-view shots and shot/reverse shot and editing has also helped to portray the hectic world or life of Los Angeles. The best part of the editing is the fact that the last part of the film is shown first and that means the audience has been hooked to the concept of development of the film rather than knowing the ending of it. It is in this background that the editing should be understood in detail. The style of editing that can be called as “cut to the chase” can be seen in the film and that style can be aptly said to fit the bill in Chase. Maciesmith has stated that the film “crash” can be said as a busy film editorially. The editing style has been able to show the film in correct portrayal. The film editing has been able to come out with the common stereotypes of races that are different. Swati has said that the film has been able to get the misinterpretations of one race confusing with another race without really knowing the differences. The decision to use the shot can be said as surprising can be said as timing of the shot. That means that sense of timing will reveal the place where the surprise should be. This can be understood in the next shot of the film. The surprise element cannot be understood by the extension of the frames and duration of precise frames but it should be understood as broader strokes that determine the trajectory and emphasis. Robert Jensen and Robert Wosnitzer have stated that the movement of the plot that determines the standard coverage that determines the pattern of shots that been shot extensively. The movement quality has been of utmost importance in this shot and that has helped the audience to get the message across and that too at the beginning of the film which makes the viewing more intersting. The narrative, pace and performance has been clearly said through the film thanks to the editing and that has to be commended ( Tink,2006). The craft of editing that helps the story engine to move from one moment to another helps the audience to get hooked into the film. The editing has been able to give truth of character and the real case in very movie is the concept of best editing rather than the concept of best editor. The best part of editing is that when movie ends one can feel the touch of the movie. There is another view point that can be derived by seeing the film and that is showing the two extreme character of single person we safely assume that the character that has been portrayed is the full character.( Rocarmy,2007) The real answer can be seen as the editor has been able to come out with well orchestrated choreography steps and the editing has been able to address the critics as the story unfolds faster into frame by frame thriller and the message has been delivered clearly by performance. There has been clear shaping of story in the film crash and that is where the beauty of film that has been in the timing and the pacing of the film. Karen Pearlman has stated that the concept of timing that has been defined as shown as keeping the frame for long time and the shots will not be feeling long or short and that has been the beauty of editing in the film Crash The concept of modern world and modern man has been said in an effective manner in the film Crash. When there has been carving for ambitious movies that are dominated by showing cleverness and showy sensation, there has been a case of blunt emotion that can be said as earnest in the film and shows a willingness that can be said as admirable to risk the sentimentality and cliché and that has been followed in pursuance of general feeling. (Scott )The edition has helped the film to unfold many dramatic scenes and that has helped when there is lack of narrative power and psychological motive. The edition has helped the movie to hit at the audience like a hammer and the artificial part of the characters has been said clearly by editing. The editing has been able to make the movie an interesting presentation. ( Scott) Conclusion The distinctive aspects of the editing style that make it different from other movies, and how have these features shaped the way the film is seen by the audience is the fact that the story of the film unfolds in 36 hours. The scenes that were shot using the multi filmed camera and had around a half a million feet of film when the shooting was over. The length of the film can be said as long for a film that is not genre in action. The film has been said of tightly scripted when it was presented for editing and the software that has been used for the film is Avid version 7.1 composer. The first thing that has to be noticed is that there was no need for editorial cut needed form the editor. The second distinctive thing that has to be noticed in the editing of the film is that there was a usage of style when editing was done and that can be said as use of index cards that helped the editing team to know the color code with each character. That had helped the editing team to know whether the character was off the screen for long time. This flow of visual imagery that was done helped the editing team to rearrange the scenes faster and that is the main distinctive style of the editing team. The third distinctive feature of the editing is that it is challenging to have less cut and the editing team had the knowledge when to stop the cut and that has been seen in the film. The fourth feature of the editing that has been used in the film “Crash” has been 2K digital intermediate finish. It has been editing that has been creative and that has conformed to color grading.
