The results confirmed the hypothesis. The reasons cited by 82% of the subjects confirmed that they were expecting the other party to cooperate. Further analysis showed that ethnically diverse groups made more co-operative choices than the groups that composed solely of Anglos.Research limitations/implications The study emphasizes and addresses on one cultural dimension and one behavioral dimension in a collectivist setting. More research needs to be done using cultural differences on the individualism-collectivist dimension.

Human Resource Management.Purpose: Hofstede's framework provides methodological, theoretical and practical contributions in the cultural domain. Its popularity has raised a lot of eyebrows and attracted considerable debate. Thus it became necessary to conduct further research to overcome its limitations. This study seeks to address these limitations. The general belief that cultural influences reward preference is found in this study.Design/methodology/approachThe applicability of Hofstede's framework is tested through cross-cultural comparison of reward preferences in four countries.

The study used data collected from four different countries, comprising of 1000 respondents from diverse backgrounds. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to explore preferences for a broader set of rewards than those offered before.Findings The findings unveil the propositions that human values are conditioned solely by national cultural conveniently, ignore the impact of a variety of other contextual factors.Practical implications How culture interacts with different other variables to influence reward preference warrants that future research should be done.

Limitations There were some countries where there were some cultural similarities while there were some countries which did not have any similarity and the contrasts observed were huge. Differences in the importance of each cultural dimension also impacted the results.Value to readerThe study is a good guide to understanding the culture and realizing that it is a starting point for predicting reward preference. Cultural influence is pervasive. It is important to both MNCs as well as organizations struggling with cultural diversity in their workforce.

This study establishes the importance of Hofstede's thesis as an important constituent in the study of international reward management and crosses border business.
