Extra-Credit Writing: Psychology Part A: It was a calm Saturday noon. I was in the woods, a small forested edge in our college that had resting benches for student who would occasionally want to take repose in woods. Below the canopy of the tall pine trees was a perfect carpet of trimmed green gas. It was just a half past noon and the place seemed vacated. The usual presence of students resting on the benches under the woods was non existent on that particular day except for a male and female student that seemed busy on their tablet. They were seated on bench approximately 50 meters from where I sat. The sun was shining bright from the blue skies. I took my seat and sat quietly for about an hour. Part B: While staying in the woods I heard different sounds. Some of them included: Whistling of birds on the trees Occasional chirping of crickets Slight whistling of the pine trees Sounds that were made from human beings that I heard included; A slight cough from the male student that was seated with the lady. The lady’s giggling sound. A cacophony of voices from students playing basketball from the court on the west side of the woods. The soft sound of my breathing. Part C: A string of thoughts raced through my mind while I was seated in the woods. In one case I thought of reading a book, unfortunately I had carried no book with me. I also yearned for a mobile computing device like a laptop, a tablet or a Smartphone to browse through my social media profile pages. I also began to think of the term’ lonely’ and what it might really mean for people that do not have anyone to talk to or confide in. I also imagined of a world where other people do not live but only one person lives. A world where there is only one person. I was imagining of how such a solitary dweller would be going about his life. I also reflected on my life and what I would want to do with it after finishing my undergraduate degree course. I had always harbored this ambition that one day I would love to travel the world. I tried to bring into a vivid reality, what it would mean for me going on African nature trails and camping. I also thought what nature of sounds would be in world had human beings not invented automobiles and established industries. At the beginning of my stay there, I found it challenging stay seated in the woods doing nothing. But as more and more thoughts went through my mind, I began to realize that I was getting more comfortable staying there. At one time I closed my eyes subconsciously as I tried imagining of my life as global traveler. Occasional giggle from the two students seated in the woods reminded of me of the lonesome figure that I was creating of myself in the woods. The more I got absorbed into my thoughts the more I felt at home with myself. There an air of tranquility that made more comfortable as time progressed. Part D: There is a great value in spending time alone in a totally quite place. I underwent a renewal of my inner being. It was like a session spent checking on the pattern and health of my inner thoughts. I sat away from the world to check on how my inner being viewed the world. I believe that spending time alone in a calm place provided me with an opportunity to look at myself inwardly from outside. It was like a session of awareness creation within me. If I were asked to state if human beings have lost anything in the noisy world, I would answer in affirmative. The answer is yes because the noisy world drowns individual thoughts with it. The noisy world is like a big river that directs all its contents downstream. The time that is spent alone was like someone who is trying to swim against the tide. Rather than living to the tune of the world, asserting oneself through soul reflection opens up a new world. I would readily go back to repeat the exercise in solitude. When I was spending time in the woods I realized that becoming a world traveler could be easier said than done. For one, I realized that one needs to have a very sound financial backing. It was also at the moment that I realized that my fascination to travel around the world was inspired by the stories that I had read about Christopher Columbus travelling in the high seas before he eventually got attracted to the beautifully looking “American landmass.” According to Mansfield (218), in the depth of silence, people can get to know who they are inwardly and by extension, how their inner selves can be known to the outside world. Mansfield (219) also added that every human being carries within him or her, profound depth of silence that cannot possibly be dissected fully in one’s lifetime. A case in point of chaotic life that has become of the world is the loss of natural sound of the Maine Woods. It’s once beautiful cacophony of the loons and breaking seas waves are drowned in artificial sounds of rails cars and airplane engine roars (Mansfield 211). On the contrary, tranquility is a great source of inner happiness to the soul and mind of a human being (Mansfield 219). However, annihilations of the currently world is gradually suffocating human beings, leaving them exhausted from noises of the world. Doing anything to get the world of tranquility back is near impossible because of man’s increasing population and need to survive in the natural world. A lot human activities generate noise that would cease if life on earth comes to an end. Part E In college, it is bit of challenge to be quite and still on many occasions. However, I always try to find at least 30 minutes a week to spend time a lone from distractions. Silence can be preserved by planning in such a way that busy highway, industries, airports and other sources of loud noises do not encroach into residential areas, hospitals, schools and colleges. A lot of people feel contemptuous against spending sometime alone because they feel that they would feel lonely. Some people also feign being too busy to find time to be with themselves, all alone in quietude even for just 30 minutes. Some of the excuses given for not spending time alone are not valid at all. There is absolutely no one that can be too busy all the time to spare thirty minutes to spend time alone even once in a week. Again, the excuse of become lonely when spending time alone is not valid. Time spent alone to reflect on one’s life may not sum up to being lonely. Somebody can be in a crowd but still feels lonely because loneliness has got more to do with psychological state of the mind.
