 LASA I—Treatment Plan for Jackie Part 1: General Assessment of Jackie’s Needs Assess Jackie’s Needs from a Positive Psychology Viewpoint Jackie feels isolated because she is left out of the social circle. Gredecki & Turner (2009) argues that; positive psychology aims at understanding research, psychological theory, and intervention techniques in a way that will facilitate positive, creative, adaptive, and emotional fulfilments in human lives. When Jackie broke her ankle, she lost her sense of social contact, which tampered with her social life. Jackie she cut contact with close friends because she felt that she would be a burden to the family and friends. The withdrawal syndromes made Jackie feel inadequate, which affected her job, family, friends, and the society at large. Jackie lost her signature strength as she believed that she was inadequate to both her family, tennis club members, and at her workplace. This explains the reason for her isolation, depression, and weight gain. The situation denied Jackie the chance to have abundant gratification and authentic happiness. Part 2: Application of the Five Concepts of Positive Psychology as Directed By Jackie’s Current Situation And Desired Changes Martin Seligman held that; the state of good life in any human being can be achieved when matters concerning strength, virtues, state of pleasure, talents, and values blend with social institutions and systems. Jackie neglected her talent of playing tennis with friends and working at the front desk, but prefers working at the back office. This shows that Jackie’s emotions have been affected. According to Linley (2009); Jackie’s strength has significantly reduced, before she broke her ankle, Jackie used to enjoy her job at the local home improvement. After the accident Jackie no longer enjoys her job and prefers working at the back office. Jackie’s values are affected in that she has neglected her family and friends. This is because she rarely engages in her children’s lives. Analyze The Concept of the Full-Life (The Pleasant Life, The Good Life, the Meaningful Life) As It Appears In Jackie’s Situation. Be Sure To Clearly Define Each of These Theories In Addition To Providing Specific Details from The Case Scenario. According to Ingram & Snyder (2006); pleasant life seeks to analyze the way individuals optimally experience, appreciate, and forecast the positive emotions and feelings in their daily healthy living. Jackie pleasant life requires to, be the relationship with her two children and participation in tennis. Contrary, Seligman argues that; the briefest element of happiness usually has the least value in the life of the audience. Jackie has lost her sense of good life in her duties both as a member of the tennis club and also as an employee at the local home improvement store. The attachment Jackie previously experienced when conducting her roles as a mother to her two children, and a member of the tennis club has diminished significantly since she broke her ankle. Resnick & Rosenheck (2006) argues that; meaningful life is associated with the way individuals develop the positive sense of well-being. Meaningful life also ensures that the parties to the group contribute to the well-being of the organization and at the same time benefits from the roles. Jackie’s role in the tennis team, in her family, and in the local home improvement store reduced after the accident. Assess Jackie’s signature strengths and clearly explain how you assessed them with Jackie. Signature strength allows individuals to enjoy a good life. After breaking her ankle Jackie maintained her job at the store, but moved to the back desk to work at the inventory. This shows that she still values her job at the local home improvement store, but prefers to be less interactive with people. Similarly, Jackie savors engaging in her children lives, but she feels she does not have the energy required to, fully engage with her children. Recommend Signature Strengths That Are Appropriate For Jackie And Explain Why They Are Important For Her Improvement. Jackie needs to start; connecting with her friends from the tennis club, focus on getting well, and attending therapeutic exercises to ensure that she regains her health. Participating in activities, including playing tennis, attending the gym, and talking out her fears and troubles to, trusted people may help her regain her previous health status. Identify Jackie’s prior flow experiences and recommend flow activities that are appropriate for Jackie at this point. Make sure to explain the concept of flow. Jackie was depressed and tired during her counselling session after an injury on her ankle and became inactive. This made her dormant on physical activity, and resulted in weight gain of 25 pounds. This also interrupted her relationship with friends. At this point, she should use her strengths such as; physical activities of playing tennis. She should be active on the physical activities that she enjoys playing. These activities are important as they can assist her in reducing depression as becoming engaged in what she loves can skill her life around her signature strengths and virtues. For the last three months, Jackie had frequent crying spells; she had trouble whenever she went to sleep at night. The situation made it difficult for Jackie to find pleasure in her favourite activities. Jackie’s experience comprised of negative emotions and traits. At this point, she should engage herself in her favourite activities regularly, and use her skills to increase positive emotions. Positive emotion develops resiliency thus Jackie should sustain the positive emotions. The experience of positive emotions can help Jackie expand her emotional intelligence skills. This can help her change the negative emotions and also solve her depression easily. She should focus on her positivity and hope, and she should not depend on shortcuts like TV, drugs, or sex. Recommend Specific Positive Activity Interventions (PAI) For Jackie. Explain Why These PAI’s Are Most Appropriate for Jackie. According to Cotter (2012); Positive Activity Interventions (PAI) such as acts of kindness, positive practises, and counting of blessings are suitable for Jackie. These techniques need less capital when one is treating depression. The PAIs teaches people to exercise positive activities. These approaches have the potential to help Jackie who does not respond to pharmacotherapy. The method is less costly to manage, is reasonably less time-consuming and produces quick improvement of temper symptoms. Jackie needs the technique as they do not have side effects, and does not magnify stigma. Hefferon & Mutrie (2012) argues that; PAI can be successful in increasing skills on how to decrease binge eating behaviors and can facilitate weight loss efforts. This decrease depression and improve social functioning. I find that positive activity interventions will be effective when Jackie is skilled on techniques to increase positive thinking, positive affect, and positive activities. PAIs will be effective on Jackie when she starts activities such as counting her blessings, and becoming positive, when she make acts of kindness, and she meditate on positive feelings toward her children. Explain why change is difficult for people from a positive psychology perspective. Include a contrast of positive psychology concepts (focus on strengths) and psychopathology (focus on illness). Then, explain how positive psychology concepts assist in the change process. Use Jackie’s situation for examples. It is difficult to change people from a positive psychology perspective, because it concerns positive emotions, positive personal behaviours, and positive workplace. Positive emotions entail individual content with his or her past and being contented with present life and hopeful for future. Positive personal behaviour concerns individual strengths and virtues. Positive work place entails strengths to make workplace a comfort place. On the other hand, Lyubomirsky & Layous (2013) holds that; psychopathology denotes traits and experiences indicative of mental illness although they are not properly analysed. Hallucinations are examples of psychopathological symptoms. Behaviours that cause impairment and distress, specifically if it is functional breakdown in the brain can be seen as psychopathology. Positive psychology concerns psychological happiness but not just being happy. Generally, it is about individual happiness in the short term. Positive psychology pursues the components of pleasure, engagement, and meaning. Pleasure is the most life fulfilment; with engagement and meaning are the biggest contributors to satisfaction.
