Human Behavior and Business Lessons from a Blue Collar Millionaire From the initiation of this business venture, Nick Sarrilo had a passion for successful and effective management. With a lot of positive influence from his father Nick launched a pizza business, which he developed from a small entrepreneurial venture to a massive organization (Burlingham 2). In the case studies, Nick highlights the strategies that helped him acquire the outstanding competitive advantage in the market (Burlingham 1). In words by Tompkins in any organization human behavior is a great determinant of the success on any business venture (66). When referring to human behavior this is an inclusion of the manger, staff members and the consumers. Internal human behavior could be easily directed by effective management. However, consumer behavior depends greatly on the strategies implemented by a business venture. In launching an outstanding factor of his business, Nick developed a new pizza recipe that would be used to lure consumers to how new venture (Burlingham 1). However, he had fears that the recipe would be stolen by his competitors and the restaurant will remain an ordinary restaurant as the rest of the market. This did not stop him as he set to prove his critics wrong. He employed a relatively friendly staff comprising of mostly teenagers in high school. This selection of human resources was greatly based on relation to consumers and their ability to acquire business basics. This type of human resources also has a good consumer handling techniques (Tompkins 115). According to Tompkins a young and vibrant staff creates an organizational culture with healthy internal and external business relationships (87). Nick also created a flexible timetable for his employees to enable them to study and work on part time basis (Burlingham 5). To aid in the creation of this culture, Nick created a culture similar to an informal organization (Burlingham 5). In creating a good organizational culture Nick placed a lot of trust in his employees (Burlingham 2). His main task in the organization was to create operational strategies and rely on his staff to carry out the implementation stage effectively. This move made his staff more obligated in working company. The employees felt at home when working at the restaurant and they looked forwards to their every shift. This trend on human behavior made the employees feel appreciated which had a positive impact on their input in the organization and increased productivity of the organization significantly (Tompkins 67). This strategy was significant in promoting job involvement, job satisfaction and life satisfaction for the employees. Additionally, this strategy of employee motivation provided numerous extrinsic and intrinsic rewards in the organization (Tompkins 112). Nick also realized of considering the content theory and offered different products to the market (Burlingham 4). This theory explains the change of preference in consumer wants and demands. In influencing consumer behavior, Nick developed numerous strategies to capture the attention and support. When pricing pizzas, Nick developed special prices on Mondays and Tuesdays (Burlingham 2). This discount move on these days significantly increased the demand levels on these particular days (Burlingham 2). The consumer turnout on Monday and Tuesdays were greater than any other day of the week. Additionally, Nick developed mechanism that gave back to the community (Burlingham 3). For instance, Nick and the organization held fundraisers on every week from which funds collected were donated for the development of the community. It is an obvious assumption that this move would effectively act in favor of the organization in terms on increasing the size of their market. It also acted as an achievement motivation where the organization wanted to be part and parcel of the community with very success they achieved. Life and Death This particular case study is based more on passion than a career. Jose Mayorca originated from Peru in Columbia in search for a job that would satisfy both his economic needs and provide the required passion he seeks in a career (Mayorca 1). As he enters the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital he noticed how needy the patients were. (Mayorca 1). At every glimpse he noticed a person that required help or attention. He realized this was the right place to grow his career. The hospital provided him a chance to help needy people and evolve his career. Jose had a passion for working as chef. His time in the hospital revolved around ensuring that every little piece of detail in his line of duty goes perfectly. He could supervise ordering of groceries, the stock in the store, slicing of meat pieces in then butchery and mainly supervise the order and deliver of meals to both patients and the cafeteria in the hospital. These activities prove how much Jose was obligated to create perfection in his job. Additionally, he acted as a motivator to his staff. As the head chef he has the obligation to ensure his staffs work under the perfect condition (Mayorca 221). He gave them motivation and tips on becoming great in what they do in the kitchen. This made him happier and his staff was more comfortable in the hospital (Tompkins 94). Additionally, his relationship with his staff increased their output in the institution which relatively increased productivity (Tompkins 156). This case study is a perfect example of the influence of human behavior on an organization or a venture. In words by Tompkins positive human behavior creates an automatic motivation in an organization (102). Behavior displayed by Jose has been of positive in the whole institution. According to Tompkins, working with a great number of staff requires a managerial figure that acts more than just a fellow employee (89). Additionally, the passion by Jose to work in a hospital setting further makes his duty in the institution more of obligations rather than duties. In applying the Equity Theory in the organization, Jose treated all employees the same (Tompkins 215). He supervised all departments effectively and interacted with all his staff members. Just as in classical management, Jose performed all the managerial duties as the head chef. He controlled and managed all employees in this particular field. As in classical management, the institution leveled the duty of controlling meals to Jose (Tompkins, 2005). He acted as representative of the whole institution. His time in the organization Jose acquired both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. In extrinsic results, Jose was able to gain more experience as a chef and acquired effective managerial skills. Intrinsic rewards include the abilities of him to realize how passionate he was working as a chef (Tompkins 67). Additionally, the hospital setting made him feel rewarded for the help he offered to the needy people. In applying the attribution theory in this particular case, one could easily argued that the success in the hospital’s kitchen department is caused by the positive human behavior displayed by Jose (Tompkins 112). In any business setting the consideration of human behavior is important in the success of the business. In an argument by Tompkins human behavior provide a psychological setting of the corporate world (76). It tries to give entrepreneurs and upper hand in trying to satisfy the needs of the market.
