? Skills Approach - Leadership in Work Settings Traits and behavior is a topic discussing factors affecting leaders and roles they play in society. They illustrate ways in which leaders behave and how they conduct themselves. The theories illustrate the difference amid a trait and behavior, and reasons of why they are significant to skills approach. The discussion relates the concept learned to that of former America’s president, Bill Clinton. Clinton was vigorous, and persistence in pursuit of goals and knew that standing his ground might affect his political career, but he was standing up for what he believed in. Further, the facts discussed are used to write a blog that talks on issues related to skills approach, trait, and behavior of leaders in society. Skill approach argues that effective leaders are created and developed rather than being born. Discussion board a. Trait and Behavior Discussion Skill approach is referred to as behavior that is driven by an already set target and objective and is learned through practicing it. It is evident that conceptualization of skill has reflected the influence of diverse traditions of academic inquiry. Furthermore, the human capital theory depicts that human’s capacities are developed through ‘investments’. Viewing skill as an attribute of job, it is evident that substantive complexity captures the degree of manual, cognitive, and further skills required by work. The effectiveness of a skill is measured by the type of work an individual does. In the social construction of skill, the Marxist root of the labor process theory majors on the attention to the likelihood of disputed meaning of the term ‘skill’. Skill can be viewed as an outcome of political and social negotiation and reflects the interests of different power and groups. Problem solving approaches are significant in skills approach since they involve achieving a target and a goal (Pearson, 2012). Further, it assists in clarifying and strengthening the links between current’s work tasks and career aspirations. Lastly, there are five stages depicted in Clutterbuck and they include; initiation, goal-setting, progress making, winding up and moving on (Clutterbuck, 2012). Effective skill approach involves teaching about emotional intelligence and training in emotional skills. There has been an increase of emotions in organizations and has cause many leaders to less effective in their performance. Consequently, emotional intelligence is significant a work place and requires leaders to review leadership development as a distinct field, distinguishing between intrapersonal characteristics of individuals leaders and the interpersonal processes of leaderships as a relational process. Furthermore, empirical assists in supporting emotionally intelligent leaders in organizations and governmental offices (Clutterbuck, 2012). b. Movie review Robert Katz’s theory of skill approach best fits for leadership circumstances of Bill Clinton video. The three modes of skill approach include; technical, human, and conceptual are clarified in the movie clearly. Hillary persuaded him to re-run against the party advisors best verdict, when he lost a re-election as governor. She corrected his term blunders and narrowed his intention to one topic rather than many, focusing edification for every person in Arkansas. This win propelled him into the nationwide stage. Unfortunately, he suffered a setback with serious infidelity allegations and was once again forced to miss his first change to run for president. Once again, he immediately sought for a second chance, overcame charges of draft dodger, and incredibly Clinton found his issue and campaign and surprisingly won. In aiming to be responsible and complete tasks, it is evident that Clinton pursued goals such as Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), while taking his stand for the ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. In the movie, the president of America depicted self-confidence and sense of personal identity, Clinton was insecure, his strength came from Hillary who eventually became his campaign director. He had the willingness to acknowledge consequences of decision and action, since it is evident that he took this responsibility for those actions even though he faced the Lewinsky scandal and Jennifer Flower. From this perspective, his integrity was lacking. On the surface after being exposed, he appears to exhibit integrity, taking responsibility for his actions; however, if the matter was not uncovered, he clearly lacked honesty and trustworthiness. Under the concept of ventures and originality in problem solving, he was involved in these sagas; a setback in 1988 after he bombed a speech, and a playing saxophone with the band (Pearson, 2012). Moreover, he was great in talking to people about his goals and their requirements. Clinton is remembered for the infamous incident where he comforted and cried with a woman, who claimed that she could not afford the medicine she needed to survive. It is evident that conceptualization of skill has reflected the influence of diverse traditions of academic inquiry. The skills approach aims at creating leaders that are competent and effectual. Societal and external influence such as edification and occupations assist leaders to attain upper level of adeptness and comprehension. Consequently, traits of leaders are common to every individual, but might be rather dissimilar because of genetic segregation of humanity. Expression and self-assurance are exceedingly perceptible due to the persuasion of advanced skills and acquaintance of leaders compared to other individuals or supporters. It is evident that leaders are born and not made; for example, leadership is incorporated eminence of the individuals who have elevated and advanced skills, acquaintance, and expertise. For instance, the movie shows how Clinton was vigorous, and persistence in pursuit of goals and this was evident in 1995 with a lengthy government shutdown over budgetary issues. He knew that standing his ground might affect his political career, but he was standing up for what he believed in. He showed persistence even though he faced continuous loss and recovery in his campaigns. Consequently, various skills and acquaintance of leaders distinguish them from various individuals, which reflect in diverse traits. A competent and valuable leader has optimal amalgamation of all of these indispensable aspects of leadership rather than combining personal and external traits that are hereditarily born traits of man. Conclusion Skill approach involves coaching and mentoring in support of management development. Many studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of coaching and mentoring, and they include; reinforcing the positive cycle of exploration, understanding, competence, self-confidence, self-esteem, and personal performance. He showed persistence even though he faced continuous loss and recovery in his campaigns. The movie characterizes Clinton as the man of second chances; he had a record of first time campaign loss and second attempt sweeping win, demonstrating his persistence and adaptability.
