Overview of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority:
Qatar Civil Aviation Authority is a governmental organization which is primarily responsible for shaping legal framework and coordinating commercial air transport facilities in Qatar. The aviation authority has been granted a legal status and national budget of Qatar encompasses the budget of the aviation authority. It has an affiliation with Qatar ministry of Works and Trade. The primary aim of Civil Aviation Authority is to provide high level of civil aviation and meteorological services to its customers. Moreover, the authority is also responsible for formulating policies and strategies in order to ease its path for accomplishing its objectives. It also undertakes the drawing up of management policies needed to implement international aviation treaties and agreements. In addition to its regulating roles, the authority also manages and supervises the operation of Doha International Airport. Civil Aviation authority is also involved in the undertaking of investigations regarding flight mishaps, maintenance and repair of aircrafts and air control operations. Most importantly, the job of verifying air planes compliance and safety according to International Aviation Standards is also a part of the duties of QCAA. Supervision of aviation companies and the issuance of license are also undertaken by Civil Aviation Authority. It is also engaged in the monitoring and coordination of air networks and provides extensive weather forecast reports to air and naval authorities. The integrity of the Civil Aviation Authority is reflected by the fact that it resides on a strong framework of various interrelated departments.
Introduction:
Qatar forms an important connecting link due to its well developed and efficient telecommunication, postal, sea and air transport system. In an attempt to strengthen Qatar’s communication sector, the government dissolved the Ministry of Communications and Transport. In its place Emiri decrees were launched of which Civil Aviation Authority represents one sector. I recently enjoyed the privilege of working as an internee in three major departments of Civil Aviation Authority. The workings of the respective departments and my learning experiences are described below.
Air Transport and Airport Affairs Department (ATAAD):
Airport Transport and Airport Affairs Department encompasses the regulation of the following listed sections:
I. Air Transport agreements as well as relevant International Relations
II. Airline companies
III. Private and governmental Travel agencies
IV. Security issues and other Airport Services Affairs.
Air Transport and Airport Department is responsible for the regulation various Airport Transport affairs including the supervision and management of airport security issues. The department is also responsible for the approval of Airline schedules and coordinates agreements regarding air fees issues. It is also engaged in the renewing process of Travel agencies authorization. ATAAD has a website which displays information regarding air transport services and schedules. The financial issues of Doha International Airport are managed and regulated by ATAAD. The department annually issues a booklet which provides detailed information on the sector of air transport as well as features an overview on annual statistical data.

My experience of working at ATAAD was not only vibrant but it was tremendously informative as well. I learned the applications together with the importance of statistical methods and techniques involved in the dealing of airport transport information. The working experience truly polished my communicating and interacting skills as well as my teamwork capabilities have also been enhanced. The experience of working ATAAD has also been special because it helped me learn some of the important principles which regulate the Air Travel Market. This has increased my abilities to understand and subsequently interpret market issues more efficiently. I also learned how ATAAD exercises certain rules which not only safeguard consumer interests but also protects the rights of travel agencies. My ability to analyze and interpret customer desires and needs have been polished tremendously.
Air Safety Department:
The regulation of airworthiness, operations and maintenance of air crafts in accordance with the rules of Qatar come under the responsibilities of Air Safety department. The department is the regulatory body, which formulates legal framework regarding maintenance and airworthiness of air crafts and personal license issues, in accordance with ICAO (Annex 7) rules and standards. The department also undertakes the drawing up and supervision of Qatar Civil Aircraft Registry according to the rules and recommendations of ICAO (Annex 8of Chicago convention). In addition to the regulatory services, Air Safety Department is responsible for issuance of approval, acceptance or exemption certificates and personnel licenses to the relevant party. The department is also involved in the supervision of investigations following aircraft accidents. It also organizes and manages rescue teams and keeps a record of information on all aircraft accidents. The department also trains the officials which are involved in the coordination and management of aircraft operations.
I’m very privileged to have had an opportunity to work in the challenging environment of Air Safety Department. I strongly believe that my internship in this department has enhanced my decision making skills. Moreover, I learned first hand about the safety department’s current trends and defense strategies. Furthermore, my skills of analyzing a situation and acting appropriately have been polished. My capabilities to work effectively in diverse conditions and work with latest safety technologies have also been strengthened. Internship in QCAA has enabled me to benefit from the exposure to real world working environment. The people working in QCAA always guided me in the right path and were a source of valuable information.

Public Relation and Media Unit:
The Public Relation and Media Unit serves as an information providing body. Through this Unit customers can inquire about any issue relating to Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. Public Relation and Media Unit are striving hard to provide a high level of services to its customers and maintain a good reputation of Qatar CAA. The major objectives of the Unit are listed below:
I. Forming a strong, healthy relationship with CAA’s customers and preserve the motto of providing high quality services.
II. Cooperate with internal as well as external bodies and maintain a level of mutual understanding, in order to work for a common cause i.e. to satisfy national and international community.
III. Provide services such as postage of telegrams, invitations and correspondence as well as organize and manage conferences.
IV. To cordially receive and arrange the accommodation for Civil Aviation Authority guests.
V. Provide and manage media coverage to provide up to date information to the public sector about the CAA events taking place.
VI. Organize and publish monthly newsletter and magazine in English and Arabic language.

My experience of working in Public Relations and Media Unit was truly memorable and rewarding. I learned the skills of communicating and interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Through the entire period of my internship, I learned diverse approaches to handle and satisfy customers. My abilities of tolerance and helping others have polished. My IT skills and leadership qualities have increased. I have also developed editing skills because of my contributions to the monthly magazine and newsletter. My abilities of handling and keeping a factual record system have also increased.
Conclusion:
I strongly believe that working in Qatar Civil Aviation Authority has molded me into an individual who is capable of effectively handling diverse conditions. The challenging working environment has helped me to develop administrative and task management skills. I have also developed the skills to effectively interact and communicate with customers from different cultures. I have truly enjoyed my entire learning experience in QCAA.
