Minor issues like registration offices rejecting forms because they were not printed on a certain type of paper and other major issues like voter eligibility issues, voter suppression - a lot of voters were turned away in trepidation of voting for the opponent, etc. In A Note on the Presidential Election in Ohio, Dennis Kucinich said. "Dirty tricks occurred across the state, including phony letters from Boards of Elections telling people that their registration through some Democratic activist groups was invalid and that Kerry voters were to report on Wednesday because of massive voter turnout.
Phone calls to voters giving them erroneous polling information were also common" clearly depicting the nefarious activities brimming during the elections. There were other instances like endless lines at voting stations bringing about general discomfort for people trying to get their votes in as the whole time balance went wrong for them. Moreover, roadblocks put in place by the police were an enormous hold back for people trying to access certain polling places. Racial discrimination was another problem that marred the 2004 elections as the African Americans were more likely to vote for Kerry but a large percentage was shunned due to disproportionate reduction in this category.
It is thought that had this not happened, Kerry would easily have been able to bag the presidency. Even the recounts that were demanded when the results were fairly evident showed little or no discrepancies. The issue discussed in this paper may be of a recurring nature in every country's election system but more hype is created when such a situation arises in a country of the caliber of the United States. It makes the general public think in terms of presidential candidates bringing about a feel-good factor regarding them and not actually doing anything about the more pressing matters of the country like crime and poverty.
Elections in 2004 were deemed as unfair and many Kerry supporters were furious, to say the least considering what they thought was a rigged operation. They figured that the Republicans had hidden agendas and taking care of deficits, poverty and other important issues were not part of that agenda. The 2004 elections were termed as being "staged" by George Bush and decidedly unfair. If this is to be taken into account, it does seem as if the elections were a farce used to pull wool over people's eyes and the results were predetermined.
