The staff needs to realise that risks can happen any time if they are not managed correctly. Manual work is the current issue in perioperative environment. Recently the nursing staff has pushed the patient on the trolley and smashed the wall. Another incident occurred when the ward man without preliminary checking used the broken bed to transfer the patient. In the issue of transferring patient had to get back to the OT bed while waiting for the new bed. My recommendation is to give the answer paper to all participants before the start of a presentation, so everyone is going to have a chance to answer and participate without feeling embarrassment.
It also will allow all participants to discuss their issues during the presentation. It is advisable to permit all participants to complete risk assessment by using the picture, which is provided on the slide. This will help participants to get familiar with the risk assessment tools that better hold the attention of all participates. I suggest using eye contact with all participants as much time as possible to make sure that all participants still listen and they are interested in the topic.
Good time management will ensure effective time-spending and allow all participants to discuss and ask question within the time frames. The area for improvement is my too fast speech in the beginning. That happened because I was nervous. Therefore, I need more practice before the presentation. I should provide all participants with Hazard management register folder to look at it during the presentation. I need to plan the presentation at least 2-3 weeks beforehand, so all target audience can participate.
As one of the target audience representative ward person did not come closer to the in-service due to the Easter. He was allocated to work in another ward as well as work in the OT. Anxiety Stress and anxiety can affect physical condition and slow down the healing process after the surgery. Therefore, anxiety needs to be managed before the surgery without waiting until anxiety becomes severe to take action (Mercer, 2008: 1). It is a common problem that the patient can get anxious before the surgery.
Therefore, pre admission clinic is the first place that most patients, who have medical problem and not English speaking background, must attend before the surgery. Patients and their families are encouraged to attend a pre check. Patients and their families will have opportunity to talk with doctors, nurses, allied health personnel and the anaesthetist; the interpreter can be provided if he is needed. The advantage of pre admission clinic also consists in helping the patient to relieve from anxiety because they will be told about all the procedure from the fasting time to the post op procedure.
Lack of understanding or misunderstanding can lead to anxiety. If patients have any opportunity to express their fear and receive the correct information by health care staff, it can relieve their anxiety. If the patient shows a sign and symptom of nervousness or anxiety on admission day, the nurse will inform the anaesthetist for assessment and then the medication may be prescribed.
