The clubs management was subsequently taken over by the great Sir Alex Ferguson in 1896, who until this day remains the manager of this esteemed club. Under his leadership and skills the team has performed exceptionally well throughout the years. It was under his leadership only that the club achieved a “Treble” by winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA cup all in the sporting year 1998-99. The size of football industry can be determined by the amount of revenue it generates.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup earned a revenue worth $2.42 only from the marketing activities. Besides that$892 were made from sponsorship deals. Sponsorships are obtained from some very big companies and vary from event to event. However, just to give an idea as to the level of companies that participate as sponsors, the 2006 list of sponsors include: The strengths of Manchester lay in its strong brand name. It does that by spending a lot on its marketing and promotional side of the business. This simply means that whatever thing has “Manchester United” on it, it would sell well.
Thereby Manchester United can make a lot of money by endorsement and licensing others to use their brand name. As far as its weaknesses are concerned, it is widely believed that the Club has taken its attention away from its sporting activities and now focuses more on the commercial, money making activities. Concentrating too much on money making activities might as well mean that the clubs performance would be driven down. There are many opportunities available which the Manchester United Football club could exploit.
One of the main opportunities lie in the face of market penetration. Since America is a country where Manchester United hasnt really tried its luck as yet, it can look into the possibility of forming a coalition with any famous American football company.
