Prof’s Netflix SWOT Analysis and Management Characteristics Strengths A flexible, low cost business model Future-proofed
High scalability
Netflix has numerous strengths as a media rental business. These all stream from its highly flexible business model. Rather than create brick-and-mortar rental locations, as most other rental businesses do, Netflix has an extensive distribution system to deliver media directly to subscribers doors. This drives down overhead drastically, while providing added convenience for subscribers. This content delivery model is also highly scalable: it is easier to reach out to new markets through mail delivery than it would be through brick-and-mortar outlets, which require leasing of new space, building infrastructure and so forth. Finally, the Netflix model is future-proofed, because the streaming business that originally augmented dvd rentals can grow with the demand for streaming content.
Weaknesses
Barriers to entry
Netflix has relatively few weaknesses, but those that exist revolve around the novelty of its business model. People who are not comfortable with the internet (such as aging or rural people) will be resistant to this radical change in rental – furthermore, the subscription service is a barrier to entry to occasional renters or those that rent movies only occasionally.
Opportunities
Distribution Network
Online distribution of media
There are extensive opportunities for Netflix. Its robust distribution network, able to get items to consumers in one business day, could be used to distribute other content or products should Netflix decide to expand. Video games or related media spring to mind as an especially viable option, but perhaps Netflix could also expand to book rentals, music rentals and so forth. Netflix is currently also a leader in online streaming video distribution. The obvious growth opportunity here is the development of original material for Netflix online, giving consumers a reason to stick with Netflix rather than go to the numerous copy-cats that exist and have sprung up after Netflix’s success.
Threats
Self cannibalization
Upstart competition
Netflix, though robust, is not immune from outside threats. One of the biggest threats is the threat to the rental industry in general: the future of media delivery is streaming, but Netflix still relies heavily on dvd rentals for its profit margins. There is danger that Netflix could hurt its own dvd business by building a more robust streaming business, and vice versa. Classic wisdom indicates that people will choose to watch content on one of those two ways, not both. Furthermore, now that Netflix’s model has proven profitable, they will face major competition from upstart companies that might have less pressure to make a profit and lower initial costs.
Management Characteristics
Netflix has a business philosophy that embraces change. It emerged through the understanding that consumers’ demands were quickly shifting, and Netflix has proven agile in keeping up online content while also respecting traditional needs of dvd renters. It will likely prove willing to shift business models quickly should the market demand it – for instance, recalibrating to push its online streaming in a more aggressive way. Read More

SWOT ANALYSIS

...SWOT analysis In an effort to determine organisations capabilities, SWOT analysis can be the easiest and cheapest mode of analysis. Auditors can easily list strengths and weaknesses and use the most relevant factors to assess the performances and potentials. However, SWOT analysis has severe limitations that make it not effective in complex strategy developments. To start with, SWOT analysis is restricted to those factors that can either be identified as either strengths or weakness (in the internal environment). Secondly, SWOT analysis does not prioritize issues; neither does it provide solutions to the identified weaknesses. As matter of fact, via SWOT analysis, many process limitations are numerated, but the most useful information...

Economic Analysis on BMW Cars in the US Car Industry

Mini and the 1-series rapidly grew at a much higher rate through 2008. Since the early days of the new millennium, BMW has been one of the first automakers to utilize flexible factories in which more than one vehicle model could be produced at the same time. This enabled the company to meet shifts in market demand more effectively than BMW’s competitors could. BMW challenges to retain its market position in the international market for luxury cars. Many automakers, such as Hyundai with its Genesis sedan or Nissan's Infiniti brand are increasingly successful in realizing higher margins earned on luxury vehicles. Personal Choice: A Comparative Analysis

Published in 1915, the poem’s elements of individual freedom and choice owe much to the nation’s foundational thought that can be traced from Thomas Jefferson to the very core of Ralph Waldo Emerson and can even be seen to embody a European existentialistic spirit. Today, Frost’s poem represents us all, whenever we face the diverging paths in our own lives.

The essential symbolism behind The Road Not Taken is the freedom of choice. Frost advances this metaphor by comparing the decision-making process to, “Two roads diverged(ing) in a yellow wood.” It’s notable that Frost uses the ‘roads’ for his symbolic task over the perhaps more clichéd choice of ‘paths&rsqu...

Rhetorical Analysis of Obama Inauguration Address

Not only was the Republican regime of the two Bush Presidents now formally over, but for the first time in history an African American man was taking on the highest and most powerful role in America, and arguably also in the modern world. The weight of history on his shoulders was very heavy, and expectations from all around him were impossibly high. He was no doubt well aware that this speech would be broadcast across the world and closely analyzed by supporters, opponents, and other observers, and he very probably had a team of advisors and coaches helping him to get the content and tone just right, trying to meet as many conflicting expectations as possible, without antagonizing rivals or causing alarm. In the end, the speech w...

Analysis of Documentary about Jerusalem

The documentary is historically accurate and generally fair. There is a lot of room for error, but Jennings is careful to present a balanced perspective.

Religion clearly plays a dramatic role in the Middle East. The truth is that nationalism also plays a huge role. The conflict has a long and bloody history and many people have tried and failed to solve it before. Nothing new has happened in the last few years to make it any easier to solve. In fact, some things have gotten quite a bit worse. There is little visionary leadership available on either side. As things stand now, it is unlikely this conflict will be resolved. The two sides are intractably opposed to one other. Furthermore, the Arab world is poorly developed...
