Extract of sample "Business Ethics Case Analysis"

Being human, a manager is expected to understand the basic needs of subordinates and take such actions that show respect and regard for them. An individual can not achieve the purpose and goals of management without taking care of the daily life needs and necessities of the subordinates.

In light of the importance of the role of a manager in an organizational context as discussed above, I would allow the assembly line worker to leave early with his/her child’s teacher, though I fully understand that it is my responsibility to be impartial to the maximum extent and equally take care of the needs of his/her coworkers as well. Despite that, it is often not possible for a manager to address the needs of all of the subordinates at any one specific time.

There are two types of needs that a manager needs to take care of simultaneously. These two needs are the subordinates’ needs and the business's needs. Subordinates’ individualistic needs revolve around their personal lives and have often no concern with the business. On the other hand, business needs are directed at the achievement of organizational goals and are often unconcerned with the individualistic needs of employees. A manager has to balance the two types of needs, because without addressing the individualistic concerns of employees, the required level of motivation can not be inculcated in employees, and hence the organization suffers. What is more important is to not let any of these needs outshine the other as the two often conflict with each other.

In the case under consideration, it is quite normal for an employee to take it to his heart if he sees a coworker granted permission to leave early because of a matter that concerns a child, especially if the employee is childless himself. In such circumstances, if the childless employee complains and considers my decision unfair, I would tell him to see me after the conference regarding this matter. After the conference, I would console the employee and offer him tea. Then I would tell him my position as a manager along with the responsibilities I assume. I would convince him and tell him why it was important to grant the other employee permission to leave early, and would also tell him, that I would also permit him to leave early if his loved one ever needed him.
