Borrowed theories are defined as the theories that developed in other disciplines but are pertinent and applicable to the profession of nursing. McEwen and Wills (2014) describe such borrowed theories from sociology and other associated fields that center on the associations between individuals and society. 

Borrowed nursing theories have assisted in offering a basis for nursing research and nursing practice. An example of a borrowed theory that has been used to guide research and practice in nursing is Wilbur’s integrated theory that offers a quadrant model that is applied in nursing leadership (Reams, 2005). In essence, such a theory like this assists in distinguishing what forms the basis of practice (McEwen & Wills, 2014).  Notably, borrowed theories assist in attaining better patient care and patient satisfaction. For instance, Wilbur’s integrated theory assists nurse leaders apprehend the linkage between leaders and decisions made in an organization and its effect on nurse workers and the patients (Reams, 2005).
