Streptococcus pneumoniae
In the upper respiratory tract in humans.
After reaching the lungs, Streptococcus pneumoniae eventually spreads to the blood and transverses the blood-brain barrier into the meninges where it spreads infections in the entire body (Bauman, 2011).
The streptococcus pneumoniae were alpha-hemolytic and mucoid and formed shiny, young colonies. Also, the colonies formed a depression at the center of the blood agar. The microbiologists selected these two media types because they are the most appropriate for the identification and isolation of streptococcus pneumoniae.

Optochin- an area of inhibition of about 14mm in diameter will be observed around the disk after incubation, which shows the presence of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Catalase –no oxygen bubbles will be seen; hence, the presence of streptococci, which is catalase negative.
Bacitracin-an area of inhibition will be observed around the disk after the organism has been incubated, which indicates the presence of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus.
Bile solubility- Bile will cause lysis of streptococcus pneumoniae colonies only.
Quellung reaction- a positive quelling reaction indicates the presence of streptococcus pneumoniae.

The WBC- determines the total number of white blood cells in a patient, which helps to determine the presence of infection. A high number of WBC shows indicates the presence of bacterial infection.
High neutrophil count with elevated bands- done to determine the presence of any infection by bacteria in the body. This is because the high neutrophil count can be due to several factors such as stress due to sudden bacterial infection or damage of tissues among others.
Respiratory acidosis-Respiratory acidosis is caused by alveolar hypoventilation, which leads to increased hypercapnia. The test results help determine whether respiratory acidosis is acute or chronic.

CFC is usually clear, colorless, and sterile and contains similar constituents to those present in the blood, but in lower amounts. Thus, the physician was relieved because sterile CSF proved that there was no bacterial infection in the CSF. She was considering the possibility of bacterial meningitis infection.
Antibiotics can change the normal microbial flora, which may result in toxicities where the drug is unable to differentiate between the host physiology and the pathogen physiology; hence, destroying both the normal bacteria and harmful bacteria. Thus, Ben’s condition deteriorated due destruction of the normal bacteria in his body, which promoted the growth of drug-resistant microorganisms (Bauman, 2011).
Hospitalized patients are quite vulnerable to staphylococci and gram-negative bacteria, which are highly dangerous for already ill patients. Thus, this could have contributed to Ben’s condition and placed him at a high risk of infection.
