In 2007, I graduated from the University of Huntsville in Alabama (UAH) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). I graduated summa cum laude at the top of my class of 120 students, winning an award for high academic achievement. Since then I have been working in my most recent job, as an RN at Henry Ford Hospital (HFH) in their Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). Completing my BSN, and working as an RN in a critical care setting, has only confirmed to me many times over-that I made the right choice in switching roles.
Working in the SICU at HFH, I have been with my patients each night for 12 hours, establishing a close nurse-patient relationship. In the presence of endotracheal intubation, which creates a communication barrier for patients, I have empathized with their condition, and have patiently worked to build deeper trust and bonding through non-verbal communication. The development of a close patient-nurse relationship apart, I also derive greater professional satisfaction in the autonomy I have, as an RN working within a SICU.
The ability to make split-second decisions in stressful life-death situations is necessary here; I find that not only am I able to do this well, but I also derive great satisfaction from this. Apart from possessing an ability to focus on detail (I tend to be a perfectionist in this regard), I have also developed the necessary skill to titrate vasoactive drips to overcome hemodynamic instability, an ability, which would stand me in good stead as a competent anesthetist. I had always wanted to pursue a master's degree in nursing.
Having been exposed to the CRNA profession (I have interacted with CRNA's as well as closely observed and worked with the Director of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists, District 1, Glenn O'Connor, CRNA, MS) I have developed a passion for this profession.
