In a lecture, students have to give their maximum attention and energy so as to grasp what is required of them. During the first lecture of each program or unit, students are always given the course outline or rather what is expected of them to learn. This shows that the purpose of a lecture is to deliver to the students the unit structure. This helps students to always keep with the pace of the lecturer as they know what is to be learnt when. On campus lectures serve the purpose of creating a better relationship between the lecturer and the student.
Most students, and so do most lectures, live on campus grounds. This makes it easier for students and lecturers to interact and share ideas. One finds it easier to consult the lecturer for clarification or for better understanding. Another purpose of a lecture is to create a feeling of identity in a student. One feels as a teacher, a doctor and any other profession, when he interacts with fellow students who want to achieve the same goal. In a lecture, people sometimes do share ideas. The purpose of this is to make one to look at a concept in a completely new way.
This so because, one finds out what others thinks about a concept that he might have thought differently about. It makes one to think more critically and creatively. Hence one becomes a better scholar. Although many have criticized lecturing as an ineffective way of teaching, it is still one of the most convenient ways of teaching. This is so because, many lecturers have come up with a way of making the students participate in the lectures. This is done by asking questions which students are expected to answer, giving students a chance to perform before other students and many other creative methods.
