The article proposes that globalization is playing a rough game against other countries, and that it is not a fair game, as it kills cultures and affects countries in a negative way. Baroud first explains how globalization is unfair to developing countries. He states that globalization is preventing many countries from expanding and this in turn affects their development process. Baroud claims that western culture is generally reduced into just material values, as “it’s almost always about trade, foreign investment, capital flow and all the rest”: in other words it is based on trade barriers and protection.
Baroud also clarifies his opinion by stating poor countries have a hard time stopping globalization because they lack the power to do so. The article shows how globalization is killing the culture that defines people’s lives and how cultural schizophrenia is changing people and affecting family life in a negative way. In addition, Baroud describes an important factor that is also a direct effect of globalization, namely the media, as it influences poor countries. This is the evidence that the author states in his article to support his thesis.
Baroud uses his experience to show the contrasts which arise due to the effects of globalization. “What the f**k are you looking at?” is the statement worn on the tee shirt of the man described in the article. This in essence is contrary to the religious and cultural beliefs of the Muslim faith, which the man confesses. This paradox is very effective as it brings out the complete contrast between the Asian man and his own cultural beliefs in terms of what he’s wearing. The author demonstrates a good mastery of language, rhetorical devices and their appropriate use.
