Response Gehan Rasinghe had some tough times adapting to the organizational culture when he started working for the company. He was very shy and his accent made him a bit of an outcast. After years of hard work and lots of networking among his colleagues he had finally earn the respect of his co-workers. He was now viewed by the executive management team as candidate for ascension. His personal aspirations are a factor in his decision. In his heart he did not agree with the group’s position, but going against the group would make it seem as if he was sucking up to upper management. Rasinghe has to consider the social consequences of taking a difference stance than the group. 2. Do you think it would take courage for Rasinghe to vote against the motion? What sources of courage might he called upon to help him vote his conscience? Response I believe that it would take a lot of courage for Rasinghe to vote against the motion. There is peer pressure involved in the decision of the group. The courage that Rasinghe needs must come from within. He can take pride in his past accomplishment such as complete a college education and use those things as an inspiration that will allow him to make the decision that is in his heart. Going against the group might not be popular, but Gehan has to be his own individual and make the decision that is right for him. 3. What do you think about the current rating system? If you were in Rasinghe’s position, what would you do? Discuss Response I believe that the current rating system is flawed. It is a bit biased and needs greater participation from outsiders that make evaluation based on the skills, abilities, and leadership of each of the individual members. The participants of the program should not be rating each other because the program is supposed to be competitive training program in which the best candidates are trying to show who is more deserving of a promotion. If I was in Rasinghe’s position I would tell the upper management the truth about rating system. The opinions of my colleagues are irrelevant, thus I would vote against the motion. True leaders have to make tough decisions based on what is in the best interest of the company. My opinion to the Young Leaders Council case analysis This case study illustrates a scenario in which a young businessman is faced with a dilemma concerning loyalties to a group. In reality the group was supposed to be formed of the best young leaders in the organization. It is possible that some of the member of the group might be receiving promotions at the completion of the program. Gehan Rasinghe is the protagonist of the case study. His upraising within the organization followed a unique path that started with him being a bit of reject due to his shyness and awkward accent. He overcame those obstacles to become a leader within the organization. The situation in the case study could be categorized as peer pressure because Gehan had to choose between been loyal to the group or expressing his true beliefs about the motion. If Gehan went against the group there might be social repercussions, especially if he is not promoted. This case study taught me that leadership is something that is learned and acquired through the experiences we encounter. I also learned that peer pressure which we associate with childhood experiences also occur in adulthood in the workplace. The protagonist of the case cared a lot about being liked. This person has to be able to better differentiate between friendship and work. I learned that in the workplace one cannot base decision on your feelings. “The Boy, The Girl, The Ferryboat Captain, and the Hermits” Questions 1. List in order the characters in the story that you liked, from most to least. What values govern your choices? Response The character that I liked the most was the second hermit. He was willing to sacrifice himself to help the girl. He wanted nothing in return. I liked the girl character despite the mistake she made. She did it in the name of love and was naïve about her actions. I did not like the boy. He was tough on the girl and did not see the sacrifice she made. The character I disliked the most was the ferryboat captain. He took advantage of the girl. I also did not like the first hermit much. His advice was ambiguous. 2. Grade the characters in level of moral development. Explain Response The most moral of the characters is the second hermit. He did everything without expecting anything in return. The boy had high moral values because he saw the action of sleeping with the captain as the girl cheating on him. The first hermit was neutral in terms of morality. The girl had low moral standards. She was whilling to sleep with one man to see another one. The character with the least moral standards was the ferryboat captain. 3. Evaluate the characters level of courage. Discuss Response The character with the most courage was the second hermit. He was sincere with the girl and instead if speaking words his action spoke very loudly. He sacrificed himself for the girl and his help was offered for free. Another character that showed a lot of courage was the girl. The girl was willing to sacrifice her dignity to travel across islands to see the boy. The boy had low courage. He did nothing to fight for his love. The least courage of all characters is illustrated in the character of the ferryboat captain. Another character that I considered a coward is the first Kermit. He did not provide any sound advice for the girl and confused her. My opinion to The Boy, The Girl, The Ferryboat Captain, and the Hermits case study This story showed a scenario in which a girl made a bad decision in the name of love. She was desperate and the ferryboat captain took advantage of the situation. The girl depended on the advice of a hermit that preferred to sound philosophical than to give clear sound advice. When the boy learned of the girl’s actions he acted like a jealous boy that did not consider the girl’s feelings and the sacrifices she had made. The second hermit was the true hero of the story. He showed the girl that asking for money would have been the most humble solution. Afterwards he showed the girl true love. He helped because he is a good hermit. The fictional story is showed the different in moral standards among different characters. The second hermit was the wisest of all the characters. The case study taught me that in the real world different people have different degrees of moral standards and courage. Even within the same ethnic group each person is an individual that has his own moral composition. The two hermits in the story behaved completely differently. I also learned that courage is subject to interpretation. I believed that the girl had courage because she was willing to sacrifice herself for love, but some other person might she is coward because she cheated on her boyfriend. Read More
