Summary of the article: Leadership and the Small group – by Block Peter The article compares good leadership and good management. It mentions that management provides structure and order to the world but does not create much that is new while leadership is the capacity to deal with the uncertainty of a new future by creating a sense of belonging and strong community. The article also focuses on the role of leadership and group dynamic. It states that a good leader knew how to involve his employees and how to build community, which depends on understanding the importance of small groups.

Other roles of a good leader include creating a context that nurtures an alternative future, initiating and convening conversations between employees and citizens, listening and paying attention, and providing knowledge through training. Group Dynamics: Members of a group get numerous opportunities for interactions. This is a direct manifestation of the principle of “Group Dynamics” and implies continuously changing and adjusting relationships among its members. The core act of group dynamics is interaction among the members and this interaction is any means of communication between the members of the group.

Without proper and systematic interaction, no group can function effectively and efficiently to achieve its goal and objectives. It is not always that you get to do the work you love, but you can always love the work you get to do.The enigmatic Richard Teerlink and David Bakke had unshakeable beliefs that it was their employees who will be the guiding force of Harley Davidson and AES respectively. Such was their faith in the employees and they changed themselves and in doing so changed the fortunes of the companies.

This article aims to advise how to create a culture that moves past mere alignment to engage the hearts and minds of the entire team. This article explains the creation of a culture of trust wherein all employees work enthusiastically and wholeheartedly. Employees are more likely to accept decisions in which they have been actively involved and consulted rather than decisions which are made behind their backs. The decision now becomes “our baby” rather than their decision. Group decisions are more likely to be acceptable because they are democratic, legitimate, and free from all prejudice and made after considering the interests of all concerned.

There would be a lot more difference between the quality and quantity of the performance outcome of the average employee motivated by rewards and the dedicated ones impelled by a strong commitment rooted within them. The uncommitted employee will maintain a good account of obstacles and constraints which caused delays, while the dedicated ones will bulldoze away obstacles and break bottlenecks and will progress continuously. Richard Teerlink and Dennis Bakke are firm believers of maintaining high level of relationships, having open democratic communications and developing a passion for work amongst his employees.

There is every reason set forth in this essay to recommend this article to be read by everybody.Reference 1) Leadership and the Small group – Block Peter
