Marin education fund scholarship - Essay Example

I belong to a low income Hispanic family which survives on hard work and dignity. Even though my family thinks highly of education and its benefits, there had been some inconveniences that led me to take some time off exclusively for the care of my parents after school education. I graduated from San Rafael High School a couple of years ago. Most of my schoolmates have already started their college education, but the fact that both my parents have a disability that prevents them from having a regular forty hour a week job.

I do currently work from 32 to 40 hours a week to help them pay the rent and other household necessities. I do not regret this arrangement because I am fully convinced that it is my duty to support my parents who have worked really hard to raise me and my siblings. I am a responsible person who is focused on whatever he does, and I work with dedication and sincerity. Though my family could not offer me the opportunities many of my schoolmates had, we believe in standing for each other in times of need and we stick together as a unit.

Though this demands some responsibility, I consider this phase of life as a learning experience in remaining truthful to one’s priorities and goals. I would like to pursue my studies and expand my chances of getting a better job that would meet the increasing demands of my family as my parents are getting older. My father is working harder than he should, but he maintains a calm and affectionate disposition amidst physical ailments like severe back pain. Being the youngest son in the family, I am supposed to stay with the family and look after my parents.

Even though my present work provides some support, I realize that I need to earn more in the future. Moreover, I have a strong desire to pursue my studies. I had been genuinely interested in all the subjects I studies for my High School. I had relatively good aptitude Biology. My ambition is to develop a career in pharmacy, and would like to join a college course that would help me fulfill my dream. My family needs me to join college as soon as possible. They are worried that I am working hard at the moment, and my father keeps reminding me that I could have a career and living standards only if I focus on my education at the moment.

I decided to start working soon after finishing school because I realized how hard my parents amidst their disabilities to look after the house and educate me. I believe I would be able to do justice to my studies because I am strongly motivated to be of help to my family. If I am admitted for a course in college, I will be fully aware and appreciative of its merit and the extent to which it would make a difference in the quality of life for me and my family. For the same reason, I will make use of every opportunity to learn as much as possible within the given time and do well in the course work.

My family needs me to go back to my studies and are willing to support all my personal decisions. My father has made it clear that he considers me an honest and responsible person. There will not be any pressure from their part that would distract me from my studies, because they have a greater desire than me to see me well settled in life. I have great respect for the work my father does, but I am aware that he needs me to lead a life where I won’t have to work as hard as him. He believes that good education is the only way in which I can strive towards that shared goal.

I am aware that it will be hard to pursue my studies and keep working for long hours to support my family. I would be immensely grateful if at least some part of the expenses is covered by a scholarship. I could not avail assistance from the government now because I had just applied for my green card, which will take about a year to get approved. I took the decision to start college studies at this point of time because I need to be able to look after all the needs of my parents when they are no longer able to work.

If I am not educated and well employed, we will have to go through very difficult times in the future. I would like to reassure my parents that all their hard work is paid off. I need to make my parents proud of me and feel justified that all the trouble that they had gone through these years had a meaning. I would also like to do whatever I can to help my community, with the educational privilege I have. As a competent pharmacist, I hope to serve general humanity with utmost commitment and sincerity.
