Summary
The first article, which was written by E. Ann Lown, Laura Schmidt and Wiley, wishes to take a sincere look at violence that women victims are experiencing. It is an investigation of two existing programs of the government, namely the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) which is focused on helping women with dependent children and the General Assistance (GA) and General Relief (GR) which includes single women victims as recipients.

One of the most alarming health and social problem is drug and alcohol dependency and abuse among women victims. Since most of the current studies are geared on investigating domestic violence among married women, specifically on partner-inflicted violence, they fail to capture a wide spectrum of violence done against women. Thus, this present study which took sample of 1235 poor women seeking welfare benefits from local TANF and GA was to consider a wider scope of violence against women. The study defined interpersonal violence as episodes of physical and sexual assault by anyone in women's lives.

The study compared interpersonal violence among women with dependent children and single women without dependent children by comparing the prevalence for different forms of victimization and the related health and social problems. . Comparing the TANF and GA applicants, it was found that GA applicants are relatively older, more likely to be White, divorced, separated or singles, have been homeless in the past year, have no children living at home, instead they are left at foster care, unemployed in the past year, have formerly received aids, living below the poverty line and are problem drinkers.

It was also found out that, all forms of violence except sexual partner violence are more common among single women. Specifically, the most severe violence such as rape and severe physical assault were twice as much experienced by women seeking for GA than those who seek TANF. The study found out that single women applying for GA have more complex and high-risk profile than women applying for TANF. Over-all, the prevalence of women violence was found to be extremely high relative to the general population, and that the figure was also comparably higher than the past years.

A quarter of the applicants have experienced physical abuse which is about 2 to 3 times higher compared to the general population. A notable finding in the study is the highest rates of violence among low-income women that have been excluded from previous research. This pool mainly includes single women, without dependent children, seeking local GA. A very important contribution of these study is the revelation that poor women without children are the most vulnerable to experience victimization so that the current focus of government programs which are the women with dependent children may not be serving majority of the women victims.
