The Balance of Power in the Middle East - Thesis Example

The balance of power in the Middle East is set to change drastically, as a result of the Arab spring. Previously passive countries such as Turkey and Qatar are poised to benefit the most, at the expense of the formerly influential Israel, Egypt, and Syria. Israel has been progressively isolated by other Middle East countries. Saudi Arabia and Iran are not necessarily weakened, but they no longer yield the same influence on the Middle East. The current Islamist states will, therefore, seek to form alliances with the emerging power blocks, if they are to consolidate their newfound status.

As far as the relations between the Arab world and western countries are concerned, the latter needs to accept the Islamists as the emerging rulers of many countries in the Arab world. Western countries need to give support to these revolutionists, in their quest to build legitimate democracies. For instance, the United States and the European Union are at the forefront in assisting Arabs to build democratic states, with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) spearheading the Libyan revolution. The U.S and the E.U are re-evaluating their strategies in dealing with the Arab countries, such as giving them economic and military aid. It is of the essence that the U.S and the E.U foster good relations with the Islamists since these Arab countries play a significant function in the economies of the said unions.
