Marketing – AMA Code of Ethics1) Should Ms. Barksdale claim that she is Hispanic American? Ms. Barksdale should not claim that she is Hispanic American simply because she is not. To claim that she is Hispanic American is not being honest to your clients.2) Is this an ethical issue? Why or why not? Yes, this is an ethical issue because the issue involves one party, Ms. Barksdale, benefiting at the expense of another, her customers. If she claims that she is a Hispanic American, she is violating the AMA Code of Ethics which states that marketers should be honest to her clients and consumers and to the public as a whole.3) From the ethical point of view are there any implications?

From an ethical point of view, the implication is that if she tells a lie about her nationality, she will be putting herself in a more marketable position because she thinks that it will increase her sales. She probably thinks too that her customers would not really mind if they find out the truth.a) Are there any effects (positive/ or negative) to the company? The positive effect on the company if Ms. Barksdale say that she is Hispanic American is that it might generate more sales for her company.

The negative effect is that she is not being truthful to the consumers; thus, if they find out that she is just lying her reputation will be tarnished and they might no longer believe anything she says even if it is true already. The quality of her products might even be questioned.b) Are there any effects ( positives/ or negative) to society. If society finds out about the lie, I do not think there is a positive effect on them. The negative effect to society is that they might already be suspicious about claims of other marketers about their products especially in the internet.4) Is anything else that Jane can do to help her business without worrying about her little secret?

I really think that Jane can do honest business without having to lie about her nationality and her employees’ nationalities. If her product is of good quality and reasonably priced, I do not see any reason why she will not be able to sell her products. Consumers nowadays are more intelligent than how she thinks them to be. The nationality of the owner/employees has almost no effect on the demand for a product.5) Does the AMA Code of Ethics address this issue? Read again the AMA Code of Ethics.

Then, write a paragraph on what the AMA Code of Ethics contains that relates to Jane Barksdale’s dilemma. The AMA Code of Ethics clearly states that “marketers shall uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the marketing profession” through honesty to their consumers (AMA, par.4). It also states that “communications about offered products and services are not deceptive” (AMA, par.5). If Ms. Barkdale is a member of AMA, she should live by its principles. Telling a lie about her nationality is definitely against the Code of Ethics of AMA.

She is deceiving the public about the ownership of her company. Even if there is no direct impact on the products that she is selling, the intention to deceive is present just to increase her sales.Work CitedAmerican Marketing Association. Code of Ethics.
