In the past, the traditional media channels such as the printed press, television, and radio were the main strategy companies utilized in order to advertise their products. One of the problems with these mediums particularly the radio and television is that they were very expensive. The top three TV networks ABC, NBC, and CBS earn approximately $10 billion a year off TV commercials (Gaebler, 2010). Along with costs the preference and tendencies of people have changed. Nowadays people spend more time in front of their computers than watching television.

A lot of people are watching television programs online through popular websites such as hulu.com. The printed press is also losing ground to the internet. People prefer to read their news online than to read them from newspapers and magazine. Due to this tendency advertisers have realized that digital media is the wave of the future. The internet also has the capability to track better the results of an advertising campaign. If a company invests in search engine ads and pays for 10,000 hits, the advertiser will receive the number of views that it paid for.
