In December 2010, I was able to join the Fairmont Hotel in Dubai for an internship that lasted three (3) weeks in a bid to gain experience in business management. During the three-week period, I was exposed to a number of activities at the hotel. I worked on 2 major ventures: First, I was situated at the front desk in order to learn the prerequisites of hotel operations. Second, I was placed in the hotel management arena where I acted as an administrative assistant to Fairmont, Dubai’s Director of Administration. My experience at Fairmont Dubai was not only exciting but also a brilliant source of valuable experience hence my decision to write this report. I also found the hotel’s management highly effective due to the involvement of staff in decision making, a factor that I thought should be embraced by all organizations in order to promote productivity. Another motivating factor for writing this report is that I realized that the theory bit of learning is so much easier compared to practical application hence the need to learn how to incorporate such knowledge into the practical form. Furthermore, new challenges are faced every day, and lessons learned in class may not be applicable to these challenges hence the need to develop important life skills. This report will detail the various duties I undertook and also provide the lessons I learned from working at the Fairmont. I wish to highlight the various challenges that I encountered and how I managed to overcome them, hence promoting my experience and knowledge of business management. The report will begin with the company profile addressing the history of Fairmont Dubai, its vision, mission, product/services policies, organization hierarchy, key department, leadership style, and competitive position among other important factors. The recommendations given at the end of the report will be highly essential in helping the hotel management to design the practical training program in order to improve its quality.

• Objectives

As a Bachelor of Business Management student, my main objective was to get practical exposure to the various management theories learned in class and thereby identify how these are applied in enhancing business success.
