Please indicate Self Assessment: Conflict Management Style The assessment on conflict management that I took suggests that I am the type of person who tends to cooperate and work with people to achieve a desirable outcome. It suggests that when I am faced with a conflicting situation, although I listen and consider other viewpoints included in the discussion, I carefully evaluate and analyse every detail in accordance to my own. It depicts that I welcome other ideas or arguments but not easily swayed by them for I tend to make my point be heard and accepted as well, creating a really interesting discussion that in turn promotes a win-win situation. Furthermore, the assessment also indicated that second to collaborating attitude, I also tend to compromise just to be at peace with the conflict arising and be over it after knowing I had done everything I am supposed to do. 1. Were you surprised by the results? Why or why not? The results of the assessment did not surprise me a bit. And I should say I couldn’t agree more. When presented with random situations that may arise in conflicting ideas or viewpoints, I can say that I am the type of person who approaches issues emphasizing on systematic approaches. I usually hear both sides of the discussion and evaluate the issue before I make my own judgment. I am not easily swayed with other people’s opinion even when a lot of them think in an opposite way that I do. When making judgment call, for example, it’s not about what majority thinks but it’s all about the facts. I believe that when majority agrees on something, it does not necessarily mean it is the right thing to do. I don’t usually keep my opinion to myself and most of the time, it helps in resolving a certain issue. I stand by the premise that when two or more carefully evaluates and critically analyse a situation given at hand, it is more likely that they come up with a best approach or solution because there are more exchange of ideas that took place. 2. Were the scores for your primary and back-up conflict-handling styles relatively similar, or was there a large gap? What does this imply? Discuss. I believe that there seems to be a large gap between my scores on primary and back-up conflict handling styles. The style that I scored the highest is in collaboration and the second highest was compromising. I believe in myself that I tend to make collaboration and more involvement during a heated discussion but I don’t suppose I compromise way easily just to get everyone to agree on something. It could, perhaps apply to some extent, like when the group that I belong to must come up with something and the stakes of getting the members agree with me is quite high. This implies that depending on how badly I want or need something, then maybe, that’s where I tend to be flexible, even compromise just to get what I want. 3. Is your conflict-handling style one that can be used in many different conflict scenarios? Explain. I suppose my conflict-handling style works with many different conflict scenarios because I believe conflict occurs when two or more ideas do not agree with each other, or that one is better than the other and you need to choose which is more precise and workable. In which case, a group will need to come up with an approach that will work for the benefit of everyone involved. But since this is not an easy task given the fact that everyone have different opinion and viewpoints on something, people involved in the conflict should stress on observable facts, critical judgment, systematic approaches to arrive on the best solution to the problem or issue. When ideas clash and opinions differ, it is now a challenge for a collaborating mind to still come up with a resolution and to work as one. It can never be done unless one has a ready ear to listen to other ideas and accept them as something to be considered before making a decision. For one to achieve a common goal, one has to collaborate and work as a team, taking consideration of what everyone in the group has to contribute. 4. What are some skills you can work on to become more effective at handling conflict? Describe and explain. I personally believe that it is way easier to give out ideas than to accept other ideas as your own. I believe that taking time to listen and spending a bit more time accepting ideas rather than trashing them right off if it is in contrast with your own can be a great deal of help when faced with a conflicting situation. Getting to appreciate every contribution or effort of every member of a group or a team can promote a harmonious working environment for everyone involved so I guess it is one important thing to remember. Human as we are, we differ in a lot of things; some of us are passive, while some are assertive. Some tends to lead, while some choose to follow. But then, even contradicting attitudes can work as one. The challenge is to find the gateway for these differences to unite. Like for example, a task can be distributed in accordance to the perceived ability of a member. The key, I believe is knowing where one is good at and never failing to consider other person that can showcase utmost abilities that can be of help in a given situation. What are the pros and cons of your primary ethical principle in terms of advancing up in the corporate ladder? Discuss. I believe that if Rights Theory will be the topmost ethical code observed, there will be a less percentage of turn-over since employees will most likely stay with the company that makes them feel more valued, appreciated and rewarded. In addition, healthy work environment is being promoted given the fact that the employees feel more secured that they are standing on the solid ground and that the company will not let go of them easily. However, it cannot be avoided that some employees will take advantage of the knowledge that their employee rights are being carefully considered. They may scrutinize every attempt of the company to speed up, thinking that in one way or another, it is already violating their rights. They might be more focused on their benefits and what they can get in return in every action they take. This in turn can also cause conflict and can greatly hamper progress if employees will demand more from the company that they are working with. 2. Why do you think ethical principles are important in the workplace? Explain. Ethical principles are important in the workplace because without it as a baseline for actions, it will be easy for employers to abuse the rights of their employees in any way possible and can cause disagreements between management and workforce. They can place demands on their employees without properly compensating it. The employees, on the other hand, can also abuse the management by setting up unlikely demands themselves, make poor decisions and then when faced with improper actions, get off the hook. In short there will be a number of issues in the workplace that can cause dissatisfaction of both, and without consideration on ethical principles, satisfactory employee-employer relations will be almost be impossible. In addition, instead of arriving at a common goal, it will rather be a win-lose situation. 3. Which of the previous three principles would you want the company that you work for to adopt? Why? If I were to choose for a certain company that I will be working with in the future, I would choose one that values its people in such a way that they make the job description and the working environment equally satisfying. I mean, wouldn’t it be nice if you knew that the company that you are working with not only sees metrics that you meet, the deadlines that you beat, and output that you have completed, but also the person as you are behind the work that you have generated? Wouldn’t it be nice to be working in an environment that you knew in the first place that you have job security and satisfaction over anything else? I believe the three guiding ethical principles presented in this assessment are equally important in any company; these should serve as backbone for the corporate ethics. I believe it would be great if the company that I belonged with can embed these ethical principles in their code of ethics because; One, it gives me an assurance that this company helps its employees to grow by enhancing their abilities and encourages everyone to realize its limitless potential. Two, it makes me think that when this company advances, employees also progress with them. Three, it rewards every action that benefits the management, the workers, and the clients that further promotes and heightens employees’ self-worth and satisfaction. And with these in mind, I believe that the job a person has in this certain company is equally satisfying, one that you can never let go easily, and one that you cannot easily find somewhere else in the same operating industry. 4. In such a competitive world, how ethical can any company really be? Most of the times, advancing to the corporate ladder is such a task that one is faced with difficult decision to make. And these decisions oftentimes overlap with what is supposed to be achieved and the means by how these certain things are achieved. Like for example, a company needs to improve the quality of a service or a new product and to meet the demands of the client, this company had made mandatory the increase of workload on its employees causing them to stay for a number hours in the same hourly rate. This company indeed satisfied the demands of its clients but the people behind the success of the new marketing strategy are less than happy about it. In an attempt to set the statistics higher, the company failed to consider the rights and feelings of the employees. In a competitive industry, it cannot be avoided that some companies disregard ethical principles for its own advancement. Sometimes, most companies would opt to leave the baggage of the underlying principles just to be on top. To be competitive, one must be tough, decision making is deemed crucial so it focuses more on the revenues than appraisal. That is why as how I see it, competitive companies are more likely, in one way or another, have violated their own standard and underlying ethical principles just to stay on top.
