Human Resources Management: Home Workers’ Training Introduction: The efficiency of an organisation depends directly on the capability of its personnel, and the kind of motivation they receive. The elements of training and conducive atmosphere also play a crucial role in the organization’s performance. Management development comprises all these activities and programmes planned and executed in an adequately recognized and controlled fashion. Such strategies have a substantial influence in transforming the potential of the individual to perform his assignment better and in so doing are likely to increase his capability for future management assignments. Home workers training is geared to help the employees work safely and to be aware of potential risks and rewards. A well planned course recognizes the needs of the employers and strives to meet its obligations to the home workers. These include, but are not limited to: - General awareness Risk assessments Accident reporting Fire safety, Car driving Type of training to home workers: Home working requirements keep evolving as various changes occur in the world around. In order to keep pace with the ever changing environment, home working training needs to be updated. There are a number of factors which necessitate continuous training in Home working. Following are some of the most important factors to be considered:- Increase in Efficiency Increase in Morale of Workers Better human relations Reduced supervision Increased viability & flexibility Continuous training plays a prominent role in increasing the efficiency of home workers, who are deployed in a particular location. It increases the skill sets necessary for doing the required job in a better way to achieve the objectives set out by the organization and its mission. Though workers can learn many things through experience while they are put on a job, training enables them to execute the job in a better and systematic manner apart from increasing the morale of workers. High rate of morale is evidenced by the workers’ enthusiasm. Voluntary conformation with regulations and willingness to co-operate with others to complete the entrusted work are benefits that derive out of such a workforce. Trained workers call for less supervision; but they require more autonomy and freedom. Effectively trained employees can handle their jobs without the help of much supervision, which saves considerable time and unnecessary overheads. Trained people also become essential to maintain the flexibility and viability in work place. The flexibility will help to sustain the organization’s effectiveness by short term adjustment with trained people who can occupy the home workers role vacated occasionally, without having to compromise the quality of service. Having undergone the home workers’ training course, each employee will be able to complete a home worker risk assessment form as the regulation demand and assessment of each work station, in order to evaluate any risk to the health and safety of the users. The trainers will evaluate these risk assessments which relate to the home worker furniture package. After evaluating the risks, it may be necessary to provide some of the comfort products, to reduce the risk of physical injury or stress. Training needs analysis: The basic aim of training is to induce suitable changes in the individual concerned. It can be useful in improving the transformation process that takes place in the organization or work place, in terms of processing of inputs to outputs. Hence the training needs to be related both in terms of employer and that of workers. The steps included in identifying training needs are Organization Analysis Task Analysis Plan Analysis Organization analysis is the first factor for identifying training needs. It is a systematic effort to understand where training needs to be emphasized in the firm. It involves detailed analysis of the firm’s structures, objectives, human resources, and future plans. This would facilitate an understanding of deficiencies of the home workers that need to be rectified. The task analysis entails a detailed examination of home working job, its various operations and the condition under which it has to be performed. Job analysis will provide job description and job specification for home workers. We will be able to know the kind of jobs that are to be performed and the type of people that are required to perform such jobs. The focus of the analysis is on the individual home worker, his abilities, job performance or individual growth and development, its terms of career planning etc. The analysis also helps to identify whether the individual/worker requires training and if so what would be the kind of training that would help him evolve in a manner appropriate to meet the standards set by the organization to achieve its objectives. Clues to training needs can come from an analysis of individuals or a group’s typical behaviour. Major sources of information for men analysis about home workers are Observation of work place Interviewing with his supervisors Personal records of performance evaluation Various tests etc. These sources will provide clues about the difference between the existing skills and attitudes of workers and the expected skills and attitude they should possess. Thus the difference between those two sets can be overcome through strategically planned and executed training. Training methods for home workers: The Home working packages generally comprises ergonomics advice and guidance. In house training and on site exhibition of furniture are arranged to enable users to select required furniture, supply and install furniture and other essentials. Users are also trained for self assessment and evaluation apart from which they are also provided with the corrective accessories. Today’s training programmes offer something for every one, from pre-employment preparations for the first job to pre-retirement courses. The range of training methods for home workers is the means of attaining the desired objectives in a learning situation and to provide opportunity to unskilled to become skilled. The various types of training methods are: (i) On the job training methods like: Experience Coaching on specific job Understudy Position rotation, apprenticeship, etc. (ii) Off the job training methods are Special courses and lectures Conference Cases Role playing In basket exercises Sensitivity training etc. Here a person can develop skills for doing the specific home working job in better way over a period of time. In position rotation, the home-worker in a specific job can be given jobs in various areas of the firm. It will broaden background of the trainer. Apprenticeship is like understudy in which the trainee is put under the supervision of person who may be quite experienced in his field. Mostly, these apprenticeships were taken to fill their requirement of skilled home workers. The concept of vestibule school is also practiced here. The people will learn and develop skills while working in the situation similar to what they will face after they are put on actual home workers’ job. Learning centre is another innovative method in this way. As per this, the people who cannot be absorbed directly are put in such training centre like-Free delivery, Installation of Chair, storage, docking and accessories. They make it and keep it clean and tidy and usage of own delivery and installation crews were practiced. In home users training of seating and equipment home workers, health and safety guide and user risk assessment will be done. The expenditure will be met from within the financial resources of the organization for the current fiscal year. The budget available provide all accessory items for the user like lighting, posters, lap top products etc. in total compliance with the regulations of the training centre. We can also provide in company home worker user training. Off the job training – new learning approach: In the off-the-job training a trainer has to leave his place of working and devote his entire time for training purposes. During this period the home worker trainees does not contribute anything to the working centre. Various methods of ‘off the job’ training included in home worker training are:- Special courses and lectures Conferences Cases Role playing In basket exercise Sensitivity training etc. Special courses and lectures are knowledge based (theoretical) training methods. In these programmes, an effort is made to expose participants to concepts and theories, basic principles, and pure applied knowledge in the home workers subject area. Basically, it is aimed at creating an awareness of the fundamentals. The focus is essentially on transmission of knowledge. In order to overcome the limitations of lecture methods which emphasize only one way of communication, that is, from trainer to trainees. Here we have adapted guided discussions type of conferences in their training programmes. Hence, the home workers pool their ideas and experiences in attempting to arrive at improved methods of dealing with the problems which are forced by them at their work-place. Hence small groups will be constituted for intensive discussions on various subjects. In Case-method training, the cases are also discussed in groups. Each member of the group is asked by the instructor to present his analysis and to comment on the analysis of others. At times, the home workers are required to respond to the queries of other members and instructors. This process may help to improve analytical skill among participants, apart from presiding them an in depth understanding of the subject matter. Role playing is a method which a trainee can practice very easily as supplement to various stray techniques for the home workers in a centre. At the end of a role playing session usually there is critique session in which the trainees are given feedback about their role playing .This helps home workers trainees to develop better perspectives in performing their jobs because they may see their job from different angles. Here we are practicing the role playing as it develops sensitivity among people which is quite helpful for maintaining home workers. In-basket exercise is a simulation technique designed around the “incoming mail” of a supervisor or the home owner. A variety of situations are presented in this exercise which would usually be dealt by a supervisor or manager in a home workers centre – in his typical working day. Sensitivity training is an innovative technique; probably no other technique has attracted so much attention or controversy in recent years as sensitivity training. Among the home workers, many of its advocates have an almost religious zeal in their enchantment with the learning experience. It provides some of its critics match this fervour in their attacks on this technique. Now, in part as a result of criticism and experience, a somewhat revised approach, often described as team development training, has been practiced for home workers. Through this method the home workers trainees can develop tolerance for other view and, become less prejudiced. Therefore, they can develop an understanding for group process, listening and working skills. Another important method of training is Transactional Analysis. This analysis offers a model of personality and dynamics of self and its relationship to others that makes possible a clear and meaningful discussion of behaviour. It refers to a method of analyzing and understanding interpersonal behaviour of the home workers. When these people interact, there is a social transaction in which one person responds to another in their working place. Conclusion: As an employer we have the duty to ensure that all equipment supplied by us for use at home is suitable for the home workers. We can help them to organize the right furniture and comfort products at the right place in order to optimize welfare of the home workers. As part of the training programme, we offer practical solution to health and safety problems confronting the home workers. Few of the safety essentials provided are – Fire safety device, optical smoke detector, suitable fire extinguisher etc. We have also for each 5 home workers or more, a legal obligation to display a statutory notice on safety measures. When home workers are learning all these health hazardous problems, from their training experiences, it will be an added benefit throughout in their career and in workplace a precautionary mind set up among the home workers. And also they will get better prospects among the competitors. Evaluation of training effectiveness Evaluation of training effectiveness is a highly desirable step in total training programme for home workers. Here we could judge the value or worth of the training. The following processes were adopted: Training objective Evaluation criteria Collection of information Analysis As the training of home workers plays a significant role in several areas, its contribution can be measured through the observations. Based on the objectives of training, criteria for the training evaluation can be fixed. Normally, ultimate criteria are with short term perspective. After fixing the factors to be measured and criteria fixed in respect of these, an evaluator has to collect the relevant information which may be helpful in arriving at certain conclusions. And, finally, the information so collects will be analysed to interpret the impact of training on various aspects and consequently its effectiveness on the home workers and in their working centre.
