Managing People Management is very important in business activities to accomplish a task. People in an organization need to work together, they need to help each other, support each other and communicate with each other. It is very common sight that colleagues usually became close friends they go out on diners and eventually their families even become friends. Most of the people advocate that managing people is a late modern conceptualization. The most important aspect for the functioning of the business is the human factor and amongst the employees of a company the most vital employee for managing people is the leader. It depends upon the manager/ leader how he manages people. Most of the businesses now structure their employees in group and every group has a manager and in more general terms leader. Every group is given a project or a task which is to be accomplished. It is the responsibility of the manager that the project is completed before the deadline and the group is functioning smoothly. Thus the companies’ owner or the people who appoint manager should keep several things in mind like the organizational skills of a person, his temperament and his communication skills. To evaluate the best choice amongst candidates the interviewers should conduct a detailed interview. Observation skills can be very helpful in determining the right choice thus the owner should appoint a manager on temporary bases and after the manger proves himself he should be made permanent. Another way of determining if the person appointed is capable is by having discussions with team members under that manager. The owner should ask team members if they are facing any kind of difficulties because of the manger. Thus after thorough evaluation it becomes quite obvious if the person chosen for the job is capable or not. Choosing the right person is so essential that if this decision is made wrong the overall performance of the company can get affected. Characteristics of an Ideal Manager Every characteristic which proves to create solidarity and harmony amongst the team members is an important characteristic. The manager should even have qualities which would enhance motivation and honesty of the team members towards the job and the team members. If a manager is very criticizing or points out tiny mistakes of his team members the effect of it would be that the employee would develop hatred for his manager. Thus instead of discussing projects with manger the team member would start hiding work. Another thing is that if a manger responds brusquely to questions and interruptions the team members would eventually leave you alone. They will not raise problems, they will not question your instructions, and they will struggle on bravely. Your behavior may result in a swamp of errors, unguided activity and absolute dissatisfaction. Then there is motivation a manager should be highly motivating he should have the quality to praise good work and should be habitual of highlighting god work of employees. A manger should always be their to support, encourage and help his team members. These qualities always give a team member an effect that the manager is his friend more then his boss thus loyalty towards work increases. Then there is setting targets a manger should have the capability of setting standards that is dividing a major task into sub tasks. The criterion on which a manger assigns these tasks is very important a manager should be aware of every team member’s abilities hence if a manger assigns jobs according to personal capabilities the result would be very effective, quality of the job would be remarkable and all team members would feel satisfied with their jobs. Then there is advancements if a team members is working very hard and still getting no promotion he might get clumsy and the spirit of working would die therefore a manager should always have promotion prospects for deserving members of the group. Consequently if a manger possesses these qualities the relationship between mangers and its team members would prove to be quite productive. It would affect the overall working of the company. Sometimes for the future of the team as a whole the manger has to make decisions like dismissing a team member as he was spoiling the overall effort of the team. These decisions can have rude, unjust and hard interpretations but in the end it becomes clear that the step was taken for collective benefits. Relationship between Team Members After evaluating an ideal manager we will now consider Group or team functioning. As important a leader is for a group in the same way management amongst a group is crucial. If people in a group would have mutual understanding their work would e have more standard, it would be more effective and the atmosphere of the office would be friendly and welcoming. Team members should have competition but it should be healthy competition with the help of which the standard of work increases and the overall performance of the member improves. Team members usually belong to diverse cultures and have different traditions and ways of living. Instead of creating huddles team members should be co-operative which increases solidarity amongst team members. for example if one team member is a Muslim and an important Muslim festival like Eid is on the day of deadline other team members should distribute his work because of which he will be able to attend his festival. Then team members should feel that the he good of the team should hold maximum priority. People in a team should not accuse each other or be unsupportive due to personal reasons. People in a team should keep their team ahead of all other feeling. They should support their team members, help them and cooperate with them. An example can be that if a subdivided task given to an employee one is not finished on time because of which the other member employee two cannot continue his task. The employee 2 instead of blaming employee one should cooperate and if he can he should help employee one complete his task as soon as possible. The most important feature between team members is effective communication the atmosphere of a team should be friendly and comfortable. There should be lot of communication between members as this would help team members in achieving desired results. It any one in a team is going in the wrong direction he would be easily figure out his mistakes and there would be an atmosphere in which suggestions for improvements and compliments would be received thus increasing standards of work. Examples of Managing People There are many companies as well as people who because of collective effort and hard work have became very successful amongst them is Chuck Pelly. “Chuck Pelly has spent a life time designing race cars, boats, snowmobiles, and cars for companies like General Motors, Mazda and BMW. Design works grew from a staff of three working out of California garage to one of the worlds leading design firms and a subsidiary of BMW” (plastic news).Chuck Pelly was the group leader and with effective management of people succeeded in achieving quality work. According to him the group worked together supported and co-operated with each other. Another example which proves that human resources and management is very important for the bright future of any company is Metrus Group they believe that management is a very significant issue. According to them “investments in People Equity need to be measured, understood and managed. Years of consulting and research have convinced us that the premium value – or People Equity – that a company experiences as a result of its workforce performance is dependent on three primary factors: (1) motivation or “level of engagement”, (2) the collective competencies of the workforce (knowledge, skills, and abilities), and (3) alignment of the workforce with the business strategy, customer requirements and unit” (Metrus Group). They argue that if companies can mange if people are managed in a proper way they show superior performance. They do not bother and neither is their performance affected if a company is Under-equipped or unequipped. Their sole responsibility is towards being loyal to the company as well as producing high quality results. Hence it can be evaluated that people management does effect on the profit of a company. If companies have downward momentum they should access how their managers or project leaders are managing their employees. Conclusion The effects that are visible because of ill-management of people the first and the foremost being that the output of a company decreases. Then there are other disadvantages like the atmosphere in a company becomes very confused, unfriendly and haphazard. There is chaos every where people tend to accuse each other for delays. Thus mismanagement not only effects in the working of the company but it also affects psychic of an employee. In the end I would conclude that managing people is a vital issue as the productivity and the success of a company is based on how the managers or project leaders manage their team. The simplest way to explain the situation is that people management of people is a two way process. If a manager provides or deals with team adequately increasing loyalty, satisfaction and output the team members would put extra effort to satisfy the demands of the manager in an effective and efficient manner.
