RАSРBЕRRY РI 3 & GАDJЕTЕЕR By Name Course Instructor Institution Location Date RАSРBЕRRY РI 3 & GАDJЕTЕЕR Part A What is Raspberry Pi 3? The Raspberry Pi is the third group of the Raspberry Pi, which is a succession of single-board computers with the size of a credit card and developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation whose location is in the United Kingdom. These computers are created so as to aid in teaching computer science among pupils and students in schools, and are used mostly in developing countries. The Raspberry Pi 3 is the third generation in the group after Raspberry Pi 1 and 2. Raspberry Pi 3 replaced the Raspberry Pi 2 model in February 2016 with each new generation believed to have new and more efficient features than their predecessors. The Raspberry Pi can be plugged into a TV or a keyboard. It is capable of being used as a little computer for use in various electronic projects as well as other things that the normal desktop PC does such as word processing, spreadsheets, internet browsing and playing games among other things. Also, the Raspberry Pi 3 has the ability to play high-definition videos and can also be used by children to learn programming (Fernandes 2015). The Raspberry Pi 3 model measurements are approximately 3.5 by 2.5 inches, with its size being small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. Its main features are: a 1.2 GHz 64-bit quad-core, Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11n Wireless LAN, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 1 GB RAM, 4 Ports for USB, 40 pins for GPIO, an Ethernet port, full HDMI port, a camera interface (CSI), 3.5mm audio jack as well as composite video, Display Interface (DSI), a slot for Micro SD card and finally, a Video-Core IV 3D graphics core. A Raspberry Pi model B is as follows: (Fernandes 2015). What is the capability of raspberry 3 in terms of face recognition?  One area of application of computers vision is on the capability of a computer to determine, recognize and interact with humans. A face recognition system refers to a computer application that has the capability of identifying and verifying a person and his or her features form a digital image or video frame from a video source (Fernandes 2015). The Raspberry Pi 3 has a dedicated video camera for the acquisition and processing of images such as the Simple CV and Open CV. Face recognition system for Raspberry Pi 3 is highly effective and is able to detect faces even from poor quality images with excellent performance efficiency. The system is under the programming of the Python programming language. When face detection systems are created using the Raspberry P1, the results show that the system can have the best performance in terms of face detection and recognition even from poor quality images. For example, in one of the systems created by Fernandes, S (2015), Python programming language was used to carry out Real time detection and face detection from specific images. The systems proposed was then tested by various face databases such as the Indian Face Database, YALE B, Face94, 95 and 96 etc. both with and without noise and blurring effects. Then the system’s efficiency was analyzed as per its face detection rate. It was revealed that the system showed excellent performance efficiency and could even detect the face even from poor quality images. Thus it can be noted that the Raspberry 3 is highly capable when it comes to face detection and recognition(Fernandes 2015). How many coding languages does it support? The Raspberry Pi 3 is a Linux computer, thus it supports tens or even hundreds of programming languages. However, for it to support most of these languages, the support needed has to be installed if it’s not already installed. Python is the mostly used programming language with The Raspberry Pi 3. Other languages that can be supported by the same device include: Java, C/C++, PHP, AWK, bash scripting, LUA, assembly language, JS scripting, Clojure, Erlang, Haskell, Pacsal, Forth, SQL, TeX, Smalltalk, Ruby and many others. Essentially, the Raspberry Pi has a large collection of programming languages at your disposal. The GCC compilation software is pre-installed in the device and allows one to program in various languages such as C, C++, C# and maybe FORTRAN. The Java Development Kit is also installed and allows one to compile as well as run Java programs. In conclusion, the main programming language supported by Raspberry Pi is the Python with both version 2.7 and 3.2 already installed (Fernandes 2015). What can you plug to it in order to use it for face recognition? Various software and hardware have to be plugged into the Raspberry Pi so as to make a face recognition system for purposes of facial recognition. These include a Web Cam, a Display unit and a keyboard and mouse as shown below: Also, the system also requires a separate power supply with a voltage of 9V. The jumper for the powering selection needs to be plugged into the separate powering (Fernandes 2015). Part B What is the Gadjeteer? NET Gadgeteer is a speedy prototyping platform that is used for small electrical devices as well as for embedded hardware devices. The platform ensures that small devices are programmed using the C# language and also make use of debugging tools as well as Visual, Studio’s programming. It integrates the best aspects of programming oriented on objects, assembly of electronics as well as a rapid physical enclosure fabrication through the use of a computer-aided design (Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011). Several .NET Gadgeteer modules can easily be integrated together so as to come up with both simple and complex devices. With the addition of each module, extra capabilities of the new Gadgeteer device are added. Such capabilities include ability to display images, and playback videos, take pictures, communication with other devices, and enable user interaction as well as a sense of environment. Such a powerful integration of modules enables fully functional devices to be easily prototyped, in fact in a matter of hours instead of days or even weeks (Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011). To create a .NET Gadgeteer, the following parts are needed: FEZ spider Mainboard, a camera module, a button module, USB Client Dual Power module, a display T-35 module as well as Module connector cables. The .NET Gadgeteer is designed generally for engineers, designers, as well as researchers that require an easy way of building prototypes of devices or even as an educational tool for teachers and also for amateur tinkering enthusiast (Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011). Below is.NET Gadgeteermodules with their connectors: What is the capability of the Gadjeteer in term of face recognition? The Gadgeteer is a useful device for prototypes with minimal wiring when using the Gadgeteer modules. The Gadgeteer can be used for facial recognition, but the truth of the matter is that the Gadgeteer software will do little on the same. For both facial and voice recognition, a processor power is required. For Gadgeteer, doing such a processing in managed code (C+ or VB) is likely to be slow for most applications of such types (Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011). How many coding languages dose it support? Essentially, the most appropriate programming language for .NET Gadgeteer is the C# Programming language and utilizes the .NET Micro Framework. The.NET Gadgeteer has a central processing unit mainboard that has been designed to easily attract chosen modules without even a detailed or specialist knowledge of electronics. .NET Gadgeteer device supports the C# language based on the Visual Studio with IntelliSense feature that streamlines the process of coding. The device can also support other multiple programming languages by the support of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, though not as many as those supported by the Raspberry Pi(Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011). What can you plug to it in order to use it for face recognition? Generally, the .NET Gadgeteer is composed of various modules for all purposes including for face detection and recognition. Such modules include: FEZ spider Mainboard, a camera module, a button module, USB Client Dual Power module, a display T-35 module as well as Module connector cables. To develop a .NET Gadgeteer device, Microsoft Visual Studio need to be installed on the computer. Various Visual Studio packages are available for the development of the .NET Gadgeteer. These packages are the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, which has the capacity to support multiple programming languages; and the Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Express, which provides a lightweight and asimple tool for the creation of various applications. In addition to these modules, a USB Client Dual Power or a USB Client DP module is also plugged in so as to attach the Main board to the computer for purposes of programming and debugging. This module is powered through by a USB port on the computer or by a 7-30 volt DC Power Source. Thus, power source is one of the main things that must be plugged into the device for it to function. Essentially, it has been indicated in the paper that the .NET Gadgeteer is not as appropriate as the Raspberry Pi 3 when it comes to face recognition. Thus, nothing much is needed to be plugged to it for purposes of face recognition, only the above discussed modules that must be attached to the device for it to function (Villar, Scott & Hodges 2011).
