Kiyoaki is the son of a rising samurai family originating in Kagoshima where his grandfather was a marquis. He lives with his family a life of luxury near Tokyo. Satoko belongs to an upper class family. The novel depicts how their relationship goes through rough patches and dies under the adverse circumstances instead of rising above them.
In Ghosts, Black and White turn out to be the same person. And that too a writer. In fact, all three protagonists in all three novels of the Trilogy is a writer and ostensibly all of them are Auster or part of Auster. But we neither know clearly the other Auster or the other half of the character who is partly like Auster.
The book carries an intellectual feel to it, which envelops the achievements of The Mercury Seven, astronauts selected for the NASA space program who had ‘the right stuff’ in them. The book tries to explain the concept of ‘the right stuff’ which the astronauts had that proved them to be the heroes of their times.
If he were a coward right from the start, he would not have written this; ‘All of us, I suppose, like to believe that in a moral emergency we will behave like the heroes of our youth, bravely and forthrightly, without thought of personal loss or discredit.
The soldiers can listen to and hear nothing except fears and horrors of war. Thus, young soldiers, bearing illusions about war and perhaps holding on to a system of loosely formed values to guide their conduct in combat, may discover their values and assurances crumbling, along with their illusions.
