Nuit of the Living Dead Introduction The Nuit of the Living Dead is a rural setting story presented in the first-personal narration by David Sedaris in France. The story shows different patterns of thoughts with multiple events running simultaneously throughout the story to point out various themes, motifs and symbolisms. Interestingly, upon picking the ‘’Nuit of the Living Dead’’ story, the story gave a little insight of what the story could turn out to be at the end. The story title appeared horrific though ironically the story turned out to be charming and comic (Wolf & Walter, P. 71). Sedaris gives a personal account of his experiences through internal dialogue and always drizzling as the central character in the story raising multiple questions through the readers mind in relation to loneliness, exclusion as well as interaction with strangers. The analysis presented in this paper is helpful in understanding the Sedaris’ the Nuit of the Living Dead literary elements such as plot, rhyme, irony as well as imagery (McMahon, P.452. Paragraph1). First and foremost, the story starts by drowning a mouse into a bucket while relating the burglar story that was stuck in a chimney and later starved to dead. In contrast, Sedaris express how he indeed believes in the world of zombies and spooks. Interestingly, Sedaris applied heavy comic emphasis as a particular style of his writing to explain in-depth of personally encountered events. Ironically, as Sedaris tried had a tangent about surviving the zombie attack, he found something strange where mice were rolling around in the attic. Sedaris suddenly went up investigating the origin of the movements and found a mouse scooting around and being crushed by a mouse trap (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 6). Ironically, instead of finding his way out to prevent a zombie attack that was predominantly in his mind, he felt sorry and forgot his personal problem and decided to save it from the trap. Sedaris convincingly applies situational irony to chance the readers understanding by limiting the effort of trying to save the mouse but rather making the mouse situation even more miserable. Sedaris comically by the use of irony to illustrate his intention of killing the mouse by droning it was through the will of mercy after feeling sorry that rather trying to save it life as initially intended. Similarly, the title of the story is rather verbally ironic that being horrific. For instance, the story uses personal reflection to uncover the values of uncertainty as well as illustrating how to respond when encountered by the strangers (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 8-9). In addition, the story uses irony successfully to illustrate how interactions with other things or human beings affect our entire lives. From the same perspective, Sedaris applied the used a van of lost strangers that need his assistance for their right direction to their destination. Ironically the Sedaris accepted to provide assistance but also found that the van driver had no clear map to provide an efficient assistance to the place of destination. He later decided to assist the driver only to his surprise the orientation of his room had significantly changed horrible placed (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 6). Sedaris uses the imagery breath life successfully while creating a realistic descriptive picture in the readers’ mind. For example, it can be clearly illustrated the use of figurative language in the Nuit of the Living Dead story through the setting, character description and the use of internal monolog (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 2). Sedaris provides intricate details of a story being set in a rural setting that was filled with rural activities of a French location. In this regard, Sedaris allows the reader to interact with the setting of the story making the story more realistic than ideal (Paul & Pamela, P. 58). Similarly, through the characters description that applies the first-person narration allows the readers to chapter the Sedaris personality while providing comparisons between the characters experience and the reader’s experience. The author applied the plot and setting literary elements of writing technique to demonstrate his exposition, climax and the resolution of his story. It is worth acknowledging the impacts of the plot the Sedaris employs to create conflicts and suspense within the story. For example, Sedaris develop the plot by arranging his ideas so that the reader could see some humor and sometimes foreshadow the events or challenges that were likely to encounter the character. For instance, it can easily be identified by the reader the background and the setting of the story depending on all the activities that were taking place in that area (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 7). For example, by Sedaris realizing that the darkness in his room was more scarring than the darkness outside the rooms. From the same approach, when Sedaris narrates that they had no streetlamps in the Normandy village, the readers mind is provoked to understand the setting of the story as well as the pot. The broken parts of the story by the use of direct quotes and commas such as “I mean, really’’ and the use of short and long sentences in the story, provide the story with an effective tone as the reader goes through the author’s work. Sedaris applies the use of rhyme schemes by cutting down the sentences of his short story (McMahon, P.452. paragraph 12). To create the mood, emphasize his themes as well as creating the language of the story. For example, Sedaris applies end rhymes throughout the story thereby making his story unique, comic and interesting. Conclusion The Nuit of the Living Dead is a comic and interesting story that presents a little insight of the title and ironic than its meaning. Understanding the literary elements of the story such as the plot, irony, sarcasm, rhymes and imagery lead to understanding the motif, themes and symbolism of the Sedaris personal experience throughout the story.
