History has long since been regarded as a very important document of a country’s inheritance of its cultural values, people and its socio-political and economical evolution. The literature has been considered widely popular with the experts but other forms of media are equally important that are capable of divulging all the relevant information of the time and place. The movies and television are vital instruments that are used to disseminate information regarding the people and place, constituting the cause and consequences that helped shape the lives of the people at that particular timeframe. BBC serial, North and South has been fairly successful in depicting the crucial socio-economic changes in the annals of the history of England.

The book, as well as the TV serial, has proved the relevance of the topic, so far as the socio-economic and class differences that existed between the northern and southern England, is concerned. Marnie Huges-Warrington has upheld the relevance of movies that depict history. She says ‘.I believe there is no ‘history’ apart from historical practices. Nor, in consequence, is there any logical, universal or unchanging reason to talk of one practice as ‘more historical’ than another’ (Marnie, book2, p32). The southern region of England was known for its traditional outlook and the pronounced aristocratic behavioral pattern that relied heavily on social status and thrived on the class differences. The Church was considered to be the biblical authority on the moral and spiritual values that people were supposed to adopt in their lifestyle.

The serial starts with the protagonist’s father, Richard Hale, who had to leave south because his views and opinions were considered to be nonconformist and therefore unacceptable by the church. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Cranford, based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell

...?TV series Cranford based on the eponymously d book by Elizabeth Gaskell is a very interesting though quite reflective of single and partly widowed women living in the Victorian Era. First off, Cranford is a town inhabited mostly by women who seem to be well off without men. Second, bearing in mind the specificity of a female nature, the novel gets its fabulous and fantastic look on the screen. Third, as might be seen, the life of a woman in a conservative Victorian period is well highlighted as the core idea of the series starting from June 1842 through August 1844 (Birtwistle and Conklin). Thus, a summary of the TV series provides a viewer with a set of details aimed at provoking live talks, deeds, and conflicts between the main...

History - North and South

...?Other (s) North and South Most of the current problems facing international relations such as terrorism, armed conflicts and poverty and human rights violations have increasingly been blamed on the political and social economic divide between the wealthy countries of the North and the poorer countries of the South. Despite the fact that most of the nations regarded as the “Countries of the North” are generally found in the Northern hemisphere with a few exceptions, the social economic and political divide between the countries of the world is not usually defined by geography. The North is mostly made of developed countries of the West including Europe and North America. As countries become more wealthy and developed, they may...

North Korea and South Korea

... 26 July 2007 Comparison Essay When I lived in Korea about three years ago, communism was familiar not only to me but also to peers whom I grew up with. My country is divided into two parts, North Korea and South Korea. During early 1950's, North Korea joined China and Russia to become a communist country while South Korea separated from America to be a democratic country. Even though I live in South Korea, I still become curious on what's going on between the two countries. Both of them can be traced from the same origin and speaks the same language, yet it is irrefutable that their people's lines of thought are different. Communism is a political movement that believes in an economic system in which the state controls the means...
