Although the movie is a film adaptation of the novel, they have lots of differences in the organization of plot, characterization and themes. The first difference is that film changes the setting to a city in northern China from the southern one used in the novel. In terms of characterization, the film omits the contributions of the Second Narrator who is extensively used in the novel. In terms of themes, the film does not capture issues like collectivist policies explored in the novel.
