As a skull believed to be of a character named Yorick is being exhumed, Hamlet exclaims, “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it…Your gambols? Your songs? (Shakespeare 297)” Through this monologue, Hamlet expresses his thoughts on death, and the fear for oblivion and the inevitability of death. The audience can also get a glimpse of the type of man Yorick was from this monologue.
From this monologue, additionally, we get to have an idea of what Hamlet thinks of death and humanity as a whole through the way that he feels disappointed and bitter at the death of a ‘fellow of infinite jest’. This is very much consistent with his presentation throughout the play as he always broods about death and the vanity of life.
