From simply looking at this art, one sees a bunch of standing columns, a pile of fallen columns, a large water body that may be a sea and a bunch of images curved on some pieces of rock. The art is somehow dull with the objects looking like they are in ruin. The columns are tall and gothic but form no complete structure. This suggests that the columns made part of a strong structure suggesting that there seemed to have some powerful beings that these structures were built for (Blanco 20). From the pieces of stone carvings with great art work, one can tell that the temple was expertly built and that the decorations in it were of high standards.
The temple was believed to have been built for the Greek god Poseidon. He was the “God of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses” (Blanco, 55). In this art work, the remaining temple columns suggest that the temple must have been constructed along the sea. The sea at the background seems to be calm hence Poseidon either was fallen and no longer existed of that he was calm and not in an irritable mood (Madden, 39). Joseph Mallord William Turner had a talent for depicting art in various sheds of light.
In this art, there is somewhat a dull tone to add to the melancholy of the art that Poseidon had fallen. Sun seems to be shining to suggest a time of calmness that may have engulfed the place after the fall of such a great God (Blanco 90). Looking at the genres of art, this art can be classified as a landscape art but more so a documentary art.
I believe it is a landscape art as it depicts the dwelling of the Greek God Poseidon. We see that the God had a well built home besides his area of influence that is the seas. The art is more so also a documentary art since it depicts the history of how
