In providing the answers to the above questions, in the American history social segregation existed at his time. The black community was facing the worst social problems caused by racial segregation that existed between themselves and the whites. It was deep rooted to the point where the whites and blacks did not use social places jointly. This includes the library after it had happened in other places like parks and playgrounds in the city. The blacks were not allowed to read and to use the social places where the whites used.

The constitution had granted all Americans freedom and liberty for all, but the African-Americans were treated as second class citizens. Civil rights movements were at their height fighting the discrimination that the African-Americans were subjected were facing. The supreme courts litigation and rulings had emasculated the constitution by a series of rulings that followed after the constitution adoption. The rulings had created division between the two races by granting equal rights but under separate facilities.

The southern states earlier had introduced laws that restricted political and the civil rights of African Americans including restricting voting and difficulty in exercising the constitutional freedoms. The civil rights movements culminated in the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which sought to end any form of discrimination and the right to vote for all minorities, though, by this time, Richard had died. The freedoms that the African Americans are enjoying today are as a result of his contribution in that time of history making process.

The civil rights movement was fought from many fronts. There were those people who organized and effected civil disobedience and boycott of work, publication of magazines, books and newspapers, court action (litigation) to ensure equality for all, joined organized groups and registered black voters.
