Download file to see previous pages From line two of stanza two, we can learn a theme of loneliness, and even before proceeding with the piece, one would be anxious to know what rendered him lonely. The bed was uncomfortably bouncy. It was considerably rough.
Stanza three reveals to us as readers that the bed moved awkwardly but was good to identify with; it was friendly. The frame was built by a person whose rapo was not that pleasant; he was a peasant, implying that he might have been a small farmer or an agricultural laborer. He would also be described as someone who would be considered uneducated.
However, the peasant managed to build the frame and it has served for a long time; “an old wife beat.” He must have acquired that experience with age. The mattress indicated an upward movement like that of leavened bread.
The poet informs the reader of the poem that another feature of the Van Gogh’s bed is that it is empty. As the sun rises in the morning, a lot of light “pours” on the orange bed. The poet in the lines two and three of stanza three laments on the long gone moments of happiness. The description of this happiness is likened to wine, melody, and fragrance. The implication therefore follows that such moments were really full of happiness and joy. The poet, through this flashback, helps us get the gist of what Van Gogh could have been going through.
While analyzing the context of the poem Van Gogh’s bed, the poet has helped readers learn of the environmental context from which the piece is composed. The frame constructor is a peasant, implying that he is small scale farmer, or an agricultural laborer. We can therefore deduce that agriculture is one of the economic activities carried out there.
