What is Seen, Heard, and Smelled While Standing on a Busy Street Corner? One could not even keep still when passers-by of diverse ethnic and racial orientation hurriedly pass, unexpectedly tag and unconsciously overtake one’s stance trying desperately to determine and observe the tumultuous crowd on an early Monday morning. The sight is filled with the bustling crowd of professionally dressed employees rushing to their busy workplaces. All five senses are spurred into active mode; roused from a lethargic week-end.

On one side of the fully occupied street, assiduous moms clasping their sleepy faced kids donned in crisp white uniforms over a blue shirt, emerge intermittently with yuppies, elegantly dressed with their flashy IPhones firmly cropped in one hand, apparently engaged in early discussions with prospective clients over a scheduled lunch meeting. Vivid and vibrant early morning risers excitedly prance the jam-packed street from multifarious directions. The traffic police tries precariously to unwind an altercation between the old driver of a battered red Volkswagen and the owner of the red Ferrari 458 Spider in a retractable top.

The incessant blowing of horns could be heard from a mile away. The shouts from a harassed mother of a crying toddler reverberate above the cacophony, as she passed by one’s shoulder to beat the looming red light.Despite the conundrum, there was a strong aroma of freshly brewed coffee just behind one’s back at the nearby Starbucks. An eminent rumble from the stomach could likewise be heard luring one to accept the aromatic invitation to take a quick snack and savor a cup of Caffe Misto with Ham and Swiss Panini.

The immediate reality of the joining the multitude in a quest to regain one’s role in life suddenly dawned. One’s quest on an early Monday morning was to join the throng to comply with the demands and requirements of the day’s scheduled endeavors. This morning was different. Apart from just being part of the deluge, the precious time spent to observe what is seen, heard, and smelled while standing on a busy street corner was successfully complied as a crucial piece of the course. But more than that, the enlightening experience enhanced one’s active awareness that using God’s given senses to cherish a seemingly ordinary situation turned it to a memorable one.
