The novel is indeed a work of creative genius (Raleigh 59). The story leaves a deep emotional impact on a reader (Phelps 175). It is a moving and exciting story. So, it would not be wrong to say that in the novel being discussed, Robert Louis Stevenson has immensely succeeded in creating a story which appeals to the readers owing to its inherent excitement and scariness.

First and foremost, the greatness of this story lies in the intense creativity of its writer. As per Sir Walter Raleigh, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a tribute to the creative genius of the writer (59). The story has a theme, which is not only exceptional and unheard of, but also the one which is difficult to imagine and think about. It is really interesting to read a story where a single character comprises of two characters. The one is a gentleman while the other is evil. John Mason Brown in the book As they Appear says that The Strange Case of Dr.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a work of literature, which on the one side succeeds in scaring its readers, while on the other side it stimulates them to think (35). When the readers come across the demon hiding in a decent person like Dr. Jekyll, they get immensely scared and disturbed. However, as they get over that fear, they are forced to think that is not it true that all the human beings have a dark and evil side to their personality? According to Phelps, the story does not essentially stimulate the minds of the readers (175).

The greatness of the story lies in its ability to bring out the deep seated fears and emotions hiding in the heart of the readers. It is a known fact that all people do have certain bad thoughts and ideas in their minds, which they prefer to hide from the world. However, on reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the readers are motivated to think about the relevance and power of these thoughts that seem evil and which they like to hide from others. Though being a scary story, The Strange Case of Dr.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is actually a mature work of literature that requires much thought and talent. The story is innovative in the sense that it forces the readers to think about the hidden aspects of their personality. The readers do find the story scary. However, the fear associated with the story gets manifold when they realize that they also have a Mr. Hyde hidden within them. Realizing this fact is both exciting and scary at one and the same time.
