The Importance of Relationships - Book Report/Review Example

Emily Grierson lived a life of isolation and she could not adapt well to her social surroundings because she had lived most of her life alone. The initial years of her life passed with her father and he was the only person to whom she was close. Her father was a proud man of the town and he instilled similar feelings of superiority in his daughter as well. Thus, Emily did not mingle with the people of the town and stayed with her father. He did not get her married as well. His death left a great impact on her and further isolated her.

Following his death, she started seeing Homer Barron who was a part of the construction team that was visiting her town. Her loneliness made her fall for a common man and she had to surrender her arrogance and her pride to overcome her isolation. Emily Grierson did not have a social circle and was not a part of any social gatherings. Her seclusion drove her to take a strong step against the norms of society. She killed Homer Barron and kept his corpse inside her house so that he could not leave her.

This clearly shows the negativities that can overshadow an individual when he or she lives a life of seclusion without any support from loved ones (Faulkner). . I lived with my uncle for a few months but it was a very difficult part of my life. My uncle was busy with his job and had long working hours and I used to stay alone for most of the time at home. Not only this, it was very difficult for me to get along with the people in my new school. This was because I had entered into a new social surrounding and I could not easily mingle with the people over there.

My social isolation at school as well as at homemade lead a very secluded life. My parents had good intentions before sending me to my uncle’s place and they wanted me to secure my future my gaining better grades. But this stay had a very negative impact on me. My grades deteriorated further and my class conduct also became unsatisfactory. I restricted myself from my social gatherings even further and even when my uncle was home, I chose to stay alone. Not only this, I did not interact with my family and did not attend their calls.

This was because I thought that they had punished me and I started developing extremely negative thoughts. My uncle assessed my negativity and informed my parents who became concerned and took me back immediately. I can totally relate to the loneliness of Emily Grierson and the negativity in her character was mainly developed due to this seclusion.
