Denver Art Museum Visit - Assignment Example

The Denver city is one of America’s magnificent urban centers and is located at the foot of Rocky Mountains. The city not only hosts Denver art museum but also a variety of other cultural sites. The history of the museum’s origin relates back to the year 1893. The museum was originally called the Denver artists club and in 1916 it was renamed Denver art association before its name was changed to Denver art museum in 1918. The museum opened a new building in 1954 that was multipurpose building that is presently called the Morgan wing.

In October 3rd 1971, the new addition building was opened and was known as the North building, with 7 storey with 24 sides and furnished with more than a million grey glass tiles on the exterior side and is 210000 square foot large enough that I was surprised at the numerous collections it could host under one roof. Another second storey temporary surrounding building called the Duncan pavilion building built in February 2006, an addition to the Morgan wing and it provided a big space for that can enable one to have a rest while on a tour in the museum and also provides an ample resting place and a roof deck that enables one to have a view of the city.

I was particularly interested in the mechanical system and also the visitor circulation sections in the Morgan wing. The Duncan pavilion is meant to handle traffic from north building and new Hamilton building. However it is a temporary structure that is simple architecturally that is incomparable with existing ancient buildings however in its simplicity it has a powerful space. The Fredrick Hamilton building was completed and opened in October 2006 and mainly composed of titanium and glass. I was excited by the design of the building that resembled the peaks of the Rocky Mountains found in foot near Denver.

I was however surprised that though the building looked new from a far, it had already developed leaking roofs three years only after it had been opened. As I approached the Denver art museum building I found it quite confusing navigating through the buildings since they were large and had several compartments. Just to the north of the Denver museum is the 16th street mall, a magnificent building that contained several shops and cafes which were quite accessible to the pedestrians walking along the pedestrian promenade.

Also surrounding the Denver art building is an educational center mainly for educating the citizens on issues affecting the world in general. I was taken by surprise to realize that the museum has had makeshift homes such as the public library, downtown mansion, and portion of Denver city and county building. What amazed me most was the sheer size of the museum that is 356,000 square foot including a gallery space for collections, three exhibitions venues that are temporary and Lewis sharp auditorium.

The museum is also recognized globally for being an environment that is family friendly. The Denver art museum has different collections of arts that occur in different areas in the museum. There are nine departments which include architecture, design and graphics, native arts, painting and sculpture, Asian art, new world arts, photography, textile art, western art and modern and contemporary art.
