Opponents of gay marriage often cite the Holy Bible and its perceived relationship to the measure of law when attempting to argue against the integrity and sanctity of gay marriage. However, in the United States, the Constitution provides for absolute separation of Church and state in all aspects of law creation and support. It is an illogical argument, then, to use Holy Scriptures (which speak of homosexuality rarely throughout the text) when such arguments are absolutely not supported by the relevance of this spiritual information.
There is a significant conflict of interest related to spiritualism and the letter of the law that does not serve a rational argument to continue to deny homosexuals their fundamental rights to love and marriage. However, religious values and their twisted misinterpretation continue to plague gay and lesbians from achieving their fundamental human rights to marriage. Consider the Hispanic community as an example. Most Hispanics were raised under a Catholic system, one where homosexual behavior is considered to be an act of sin.
Homophobia is a common belief in these communities driven by these distorted religious values and many Hispanic gays and lesbians experience verbal and physical violence and bullying both in and out of the home. Abraham Maslow, a famous psychologist, indicated that in order for a person to develop self-esteem and achieve the pinnacle of their capabilities as a well-adjusted person, they must experience a sense of belonging. Families need to be educated on the biological processes of homosexuality, especially those supported by scientific research literature, and shed these long-standing, corrosive values to ensure adequate support for gay marriage.
If people ceased their hypocritical values using religious beliefs as support, it is likely gays and lesbians would make significant strides in securing the right to marry same sex partners. There is a fundamental problem with the existing social norms related to the appropriateness of homosexual marriage founded on irrational beliefs associated with spiritualism. Many holy texts, from Christians to Muslims, describe other dimensions of lifestyle that are deemed inappropriate to divinity. Some of these include lying, thievery, adultery, and cruelty to one’s fellow man.
However, many individuals in society continue to thrive within these immoral principles, but still maintain the right to marry partners of the opposite sex. Gays and lesbians, those who are plagued by hypocritical opponents who cite religion as the root cause for their disturbances about gay marriage could also, quite easily, cite this same information as support for their case. Why should it be acceptable, then, for a heterosexual engaging in extra-marital affairs or continue to lie to their peers or management to retain their own marriage license?! The significance of this argument in favor of gay and lesbian marriage rights is just as much justified, then, as those who argue about the sinful nature of same sex coupling.
There is just no validity to these types of arguments when they stem from individuals who engage in a lifestyle with questionable moral and ethical principles guiding their attitudes and behavior. Many gay and lesbian individuals seek marriage because they want and tangibly need the rewards of a
