This is where it becomes obvious that while males initially appear to be in control of the dating scene due to their knowledge of what would impress a girl, they are actually controlled by these very ideas.

On the other hand, the aggressive wordplay used in the story is meant to establish the idea that the storyteller is an authority on the subject. It, of course, adds credibility and seriousness to the ideas presented. Diaz effectively uses imperative sentences and dynamic language such as: “Hide the picture of yourself with an Afro” or “Clear the government cheese from the refrigerator” (Diaz 84) to create a feeling of power, forcefulness, and superiority to make the text believable for the readers. Overall, this story is a good read for those who want to be entertained by the stereotypes of society, but these instructions should be taken with a grain of salt.
