There is no need to have laws which regulate immigration into the UK’. Consider whether you agree with the above ment, presenting arguments and evidence for your position. People migrate from one country to another in search of better life. Some of the reasons which enforce them to leave their homeland include wealth, hardship, prosperity and poverty. In most of the cases, people migrate because the previous countries in which they have been residing do not provide enough money to spend their life. Therefore, the biggest factor which has been observed due to which immigrants flee their country is money. Nothing is free in this world and nowadays, jobs also don’t come easily, especially when there is little or no education. UK offers both, job opportunities as well as education. Most of the times, immigrants do not want their children the kind of life which they had spent. In such case, people make the run for the border. Nowadays, the contemporary British society is facing the most serious problems of immigration laws. A lot of people from all over the world have started moving to UK. A large number of those people come from Asia. States like Manchester, London and Birmingham constitute of Asian immigrants to a greater extent than ever before. Many experts believe that the increasing number of illegal immigrants is dangerous not only for the socio-political life of the nation but also for the development of the national economy. This situation has become a serious concern for UK Government. Argumentative Aspects The history of UK reveals a heavy inflow of immigrants which leads to adverse reaction to the existing population of the country. Majority of the citizens of UK believe that the number of immigrants that are coming to the country must be limited and the existing immigration laws must not be changed. The direction of immigration can be in both ways, there can be positive development but on other hand, negative development can also not be denied. On one hand, it open various ways for the talented people coming from other land but on other hand it raises the rate of competition and issues of struggling for native people. In my opinion, the existing immigrations laws of UK must not be changed. The reason is that immigration laws work well for the stability of the population of a country and it helps in reducing the citizens’ unsatisfaction that comes from the antagonism towards the immigrants. Many citizens of UK believe that the major concern is that when immigrants come to their country, they snatch jobs from the native people. In actual, that’s not the real situation. The major concern is of illegal immigration. The Nationality Act and Immigration limits the number of work permits or working visas to protect the jobs of UK citizens. Reasons for the Opinion of Continuing Existing Immigration Laws in UK It is evident that immigrants increase the rivalry in labor market of UK, which, as a whole is good for the betterment of the country. In contrast to that, illegal immigrants can become a huge problem for the country. Therefore, the laws must not be changed but the execution of the laws must be controlled. Another reasons which supports the continuity of the existing immigration laws is simply because the current global economic condition. The world economies are facing recession in one or other. Therefore, the persistence of the existing immigration laws can help in fighting against other major issues such as terrorist attacks, extremism, violence etc. If immigration laws are not stringent, then it may give birth to these issues, hence creating a more difficult situation to deal with. The strictness of the immigration laws can be increased but amendments to remove them cannot be appreciated at all. Another reason which is associated with recession which is hitting the European countries is that governments have to take care of more serious issues than immigration which include taxation, money supply, health care system etc. These issues require more serious attention than amendments in immigration laws therefore; currently it does not seem to be favorable to make any changes in the current immigration laws of UK. The existing immigration laws of UK are not as terrible as some people think they are. They work quite well and provide the economy with skilled employees, qualified work force and intense competition in the labor market. These factors are constructive for the employers, employees and company as a whole. However, there are some negative aspects of the existing legislation. They include disappointment of the illegal immigrants which certainly needs to be taken care by the regulatory authorities of the country. Other negative views might arise from those people who are not in a position to compete with skilled and better educated foreign employees. This problem, too, must be resolved with our society and cannot be resolved by modifying laws. In UK, Immigration laws have undergone metamorphic transitions historically. A lot of people have entered illegally or overstayed in UK due to varying reasons. In this regard, UK Home Office has made the criteria of immigration more stringent. UK Home Office has established enforcement teams in Manchester and Liverpool. These teams work to prevent, illegal immigrants, removing and locating of migrants who have entered the country illegally or have overstayed. If they receive the information that an employer has those workers working for him who do not possess the right of working, the teams instantly visit the premises of that employer (Home Office UK Border Agency, n.d). JC (2009) has stated that immigrants not only impact the labor market of the country but also influence the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. JC (2009) concluded that a direct correlation between immigrants and GDP has been found. It validates the rationale that when workers enter the country with their abilities, skills and knowledge they contribute to the GDP of the country to a certain extent. However, in GDP there is no concept of profit but a positive trend has been observed due to the increasing number of immigrants which contribute through their skills and abilities. Despite of having some clear reasons pertaining to the consistency in the Immigration laws of UK, there are number of other reasons that urge the need of making changes in the UK Immigrations Laws. These reasons are needed to be considered and cannot be ignored altogether. Reasons for the Opinion of Modernizing Immigration Laws in UK The recent incidents such 9/11 have given birth to serious security concern. The terrorists’ attacks have created nuisance all over the world. People are now more concerned about their life security more than they are concerned about their job security. It is far more important for them to save their life as well as their family’s life than saving their jobs. In this regard, people have started to migrate to those countries which offer better life security. On the other hand, governments of almost every other country have increases the tendency of strictness in their Immigration Laws. It is not easier for people to move from one country to other country as freely as they used to be. Developed countries are now getting more applications of immigrants than ever before (Homeland Security 2011, p. 5). In 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, the number of immigrants getting permanent residency are 1,122,257, 1,266,129, 1,052,415, 1,107,126, 1,130,818 and 1,042,625 respectively as compared to the previous years when it has not been too much. Certainly, there are various reasons behind such an increase in the number of increased residency. Population is another major reason, but it does predict that due to security concern the number of people migrating from their home country has increased than ever before. Racial discrimination is another major stumbling block. Government of UK is modifying their immigration laws in order to stop the inflow of professionals coming from China and India. The immigrants coming from these countries have posed a genuine threat in terms of workmanship and talent to the local populace of the country. Yet, the implementation of such acts is nothing but an act of desperation. It reflects the narrow thinking of the government in the global scenario. No matter if the immigrants are coming from China or India, as long as they are legal, the Government cannot take any action against them. The reason is that legal immigrants pay taxes and therefore, contribute as a major part for the development of the economy. Therefore, modernizing laws on the basis of racial discrimination is not appreciable by the people living outside of UK. It has been a common practice for UK to continually amend and modernizes their immigration law as the situation demands. The major changes in the immigration laws of UK have been undergone in the last 15 years. Little amendments are the necessity of legislation but it is not possible to completely eradicate that law. It has strong basis and it has been formulated to accomplish a certain purpose. Making changes in immigration laws is necessary since the situations are continually changing but it is not possible to survive without Immigration Laws since they serve a major purpose. Other common reasons why the immigration laws cannot be abolish are mentioned in the subsequent sections of this paper. Other Needs of Regulating Immigrations Laws in UK Citizenship and Immigration Laws Immigration laws in UK help to keep an eye on all the immigrants who enter and exit the premises of the country. Without proper surveillance, it can become impractical for the government to oversee the people coming in and going out especially after the incidents of 9/11. Such incidents have raised fury and uncertainty among people which can lead them in going into different directions. Managing these people can be difficult for the government if the proper immigration laws are not implemented. This situation can give rise to various problems such as insecurity, uncertainty, crimes, illegal residents and illegal workers, which ultimately become non-tax payers and deteriorate the economy of the country. Crime Immigration Laws protect a country from dangerous and harmful immigrants. Through immigration laws, a scrutiny of all the entrants is performed. If the proper check in balance is not maintained then anyone can get the right to enter the country and do whatever they want. This can end up in destructive acts as well. Health Through Immigration Laws, Immigrants having any sort of contagious diseases are not allowed to enter into the premises of the country. If there is not any kind of immigration laws, than those people would enter the country and would spread the bacteria of the relevant disease in the native population. This problem would have ripple effect and would give rise to health care and other issues. Labor Force Immigration Laws are designed to keep a limited amount of workers in a country so that there is not any kind of surplus of workers. If there aren’t any Immigration Laws and lots of workers get into the country, then there would be fewer jobs for those who are already present within the country i.e. native citizens. Immigration Laws keep a balance of workers in a country. However, this statement is not possible in all the cases. According to Caplan (2012), ‘Immigration restrictions are not necessary to protect workers.’ Therefore, the better is the enforcement of immigration laws, the better results will come forth. National Security UK Immigration laws help in preventing the potential enemies from entering into the country. Therefore, Immigration Laws tend to strengthen the national security of a country. Without having immigration laws, the security concern can increase to a great extent causing trouble for both, the citizens as well as the government. For any country, it is impossible to survive without having Immigration Laws. The better the implementation of immigration laws, the better the control over unexpected situations.
