Essay, Journalism, mass media and communication-Portfolio Case Newsletter Newsletter The Up It is my sincere hope that the holiday is fine for everyone associated with this great institution. More so, we remain hopeful that the students are well and relaxed following another cumbersome session. We are aware that many of you could not wait to see the session’s conclusion, a completely understandable feeling following the multiple events we had towards the close of the session. It would have been everyone’s wish to have the time off to enjoy with family and link up with friends from other Universities, after all no one hates relaxation. Unfortunately, not all of us have had the opportunity to visit home yet, particularly those in charge of The Update. The Update is a new newsletter which has been launched to keep the students of Regent University abreast with the school’s activities during the holiday periods. The hope is that the student’s will continually feel a part and parcel of this great institution even during the holidays. Hopefully, the newsletter also hopes to draw interest on some of the activities which can do better with increased participation. To start with, Regent University has been fortunate to hold the regional sports day. The sports day which is a new phenomenon in this region hopes to bring together students from Universities around the region. This is seen as a major step in improving the social life of those involved as well as showcasing talent which is abundant across our Universities. Most of you may not be aware that the preparations for this event have been ongoing for three months now. This may be due to the fact that those who were overly involved were participants who have been honing their skills over this period. As per the University’s administration, participation is expected to go a notch higher next year especially given the great strides recorded this time round. Increased participation is expected to come from inclusion of additional activities and aggressive publicity. Besides the inter-University activities, there are ongoing activities to improve the face of our campus. The university has initiated mass clean up, painting and landscaping which is clearly rejuvenating our campus. Notably, students with specific expertise and interest have been allowed an opportunity to showcase this and are duly compensated for their efforts. Sponsorship is also available for those who do exemplary well in their respective activities. All the same, the idea is to spruce up the University and improve its general image. Case 3-Pitch letter One thing that has always created a thrill in the minds of young people is a chance to understand, adorn and for the selected few create fashion. Fashion is only perhaps second nature to technology; of course this is done in remembrance of the winding queues at the launch of famous gadgets such as the I-pod, I-Phone and most Apple products. Fashion may not attract such huge interest but the interest it draws cannot be disputed. In the UK, there are not many who are able to create this thrill in fashion than Upstyler. Upstlyer is an online fashion store which was set up by Susanne James in 2010. Despite its relatively young life, it has managed to attract massive interest of some of the most renowned fashion queens such as Naomi Campbell. Not many of us may know these pace setters in fashion given the recent proliferation of fashion stores and houses but we finally have an opportunity to admire the great work of Upstyler. The company has a fashion event that will take place at the Finsbury Hotel, Islington on September 9th 2014 at 3pm. The fashion event has been set up to celebrate Upstyler’s fourth anniversary and also provide an opportunity for fashion lovers to try out and buy some of the world’s iconic fashion pieces. The event will be honored by the presence of super model, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss who will be in hand to showcase Upstyler’s blend of vintage and designer clothing. Central to this fashion/media event is building awareness of Trekstock. Trekstock, is an initiative to mitigate the threat of cancer by raising funds to support those with cancer and also help fund research activities that would help reduce the threat of cancer. Unlike what many may think, this is not a publicity stunt but a passionate course for Susanne James and this is just a way of letting others help in curbing this global menace. It is clear that your magazine, The Time is Now, is tailored for young people aged 18-30 who are interested in living for the moment, saving the planet, improving the environment, and also looking good and living for the moment. These definers of your target audience provide a perfect match for the ideas, intentions and the actual reason for Upstyler’s existence. Notably, Upstlyer, beings a fashion store has the primary goal of ensuring people look good and feels even better. This is seen as an important step in ensuring that people live for the moment buy enjoying every moment of their lives. Further, Upstyler has managed to draw interest on specific goals which appear neglected by other fashion house. The most notable of these goals is represented by the entities policy on environmental protection. The materials and resulting products sold by Upstyler are environmental friendly. This is not by chance but a result of a carefully structured system that maximizes on environmental friendly materials. Of note is that this goal appears as a priority for your audience who identify improving the environment as a primary goal. In as far as love for fashion and need to live for the moment is concerned, Upstyler’s event provides a variety of fashion items which meet the needs of every fashion lover. Upstyler’s goal is to set the world alight with a perfect blend of fashion and vintage designer clothing. As a reward for your audience, who will certainly find this event a perfect match for their interests, we will have a competition in which they identify the best way to ensure environmental protection through fashion. At the same time, we will run an essay competition on how to reinvigorate our generation through fashion. The winners of these competitions will walk away with a vintage Gucci handbag amongst other stylish fashion items. It is my sincere hope that your entity finds the relevance and importance of our publication in your magazine as it represents a welcome match of ambition and goal for all those involved. Case 4-Negative Publicity and PR Strategies The Situation: Phone hacking scandal by News of the World and Richard Keys sexism remarks SWOT Analysis Both incidences from different media houses, News of the World and Sky Sports represent unacceptable nuances in the media world. The first situation was a blatant upset of person’s entitlement to privacy while the second bordered on discriminatory comments directed at a female referee, Sian Massey. The two incidences led to a public out roar directed not only to the individuals involved but to the respective media entities as their apparent inaction or application of mild punishments was interpreted as agreement. The strength of these two incidences simply lay on the fact that the public was already aware of the ensuing actions. On the other hand, the cases weakness was probably the media houses reluctance or delayed response to address the issues. At the same time, the opportunity lay in fast action, the media houses ought to have acted fast by either denoucnign the actions or in extreme measures firing or requiring resignation from the individuals involved. Notably, the worst thing in these cases is failure to do anything or to delay action which is what happened with the two cases. The biggest threat was the fact that the unfortunate acts were already in public domain and the public had expectations on what needed to be done under the circumstances. Stakeholders Either way you look at it, both incidences represented a loss for all stakeholders. The media houses, employees, the shareholders and the customers. The worst case was the fact that customers avoided association and preferred other media houses over the immediate period. PR Strategies In an attempt to undo and improve the image of the media houses objective PR strategies must be formulated and directed at the most critical stakeholders. In both cases the public, the public are the recipient (customers/buyers) of the news item and any services/products sold by the news houses. Mending the broken relationship should be a priority as this would be a major step in restoring the relationship and trust enjoyed earlier. Unfortunately, some cases such as the phone hacking in News Corporation were much more threatening and the ramifications would be greatly challenging to deal with as was evidenced by the eventual discontinuation. The other focus would be to the shareholders who need to be reassured that the incidence does not have a direct bearing on the valuation of their holding. The next strategy should aim at ensuring the togetherness of the entire organization in an attempt to pull the organization out of the threatening negative publicity. Read More
