The Great Escape Interpersonal Communication in the movie, “The Great Escape” Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? A close inspection of the questions in relation to what happens in various contemporary societies reveal that art always try to mimic life, as well as, all the problems it comes with. Who would have thought that one would find interpersonal communication concepts in Hollywood movies? For instance, a closer look and scrutiny at Stevie mcQueen’s movie, “The Great Escape.” The movie is mainly about an escape by allied war prisoners from the German Prisoners of War Camp during the Second World War. The film is wholly based on the book, which bears the same name. The book is a non-fiction one and was written by Paul Brick hill. Before the actual escape takes place, there is rumor, and the Kuhn warns the naughtiest and rude prisoner, Bartlett that if he attempt escaping again, he will be shot to death. Gestapo agent Kuhn had demanded that he should be placed under strict or tight restrictions to prevent him from escaping. Kuhn organizes teams to tunnel. They make civilians clothes, procure contraband materials, forge documents, and ensure that the guards are prevented from discovering their materials. Other events after the escape unfold. One of the most evident interpersonal concepts in the movie is the use of humor to reduce tension within the film. The second concept, which is also dominant in the movie, is relationship repair. The last communication concept present in the film is relationship deterioration. This paper will look into lucid analysis of the three-mentioned concept using the movie as a fundamental or core reference. The most obvious communication concept present in the film is that of relationship deterioration. The relationship between the prisoners of war and that of the officers and generals in charge of the prisons is not a good one. There is hatred between the two groups and the prisoners have become wiser than the soldiers and other prison wardens. The deteriorating relationship is what makes the two sides form a kind of enmity that does not easily end. This is what makes the Gestapo agent Kuhn give instruction that the “Big X” (Rodger Bartlett), be restricted within the prison (Maserole, 2008). However, what the Germans soldiers never realize is the greatest mistake they are making. They are keeping the same prisoners with high intellectual abilities in the same cell. This makes them come up with ideas that are meant to deliver them from the oppression they face at the prison environs. The hatred is one of the symbol or representation of relationship deterioration in the film. Before the imprisonment, the two parties enjoyed peace and tranquility. War or any form of disagreement was initially rare before the war broke and several fighters were captured by the opposing sides and placed in a camp, where they are confined within a given area. This is meant to deny them their freedom of movement, as well as, torture them in one way or another. The short-term effect of the relationship deterioration is that the two groups end up living apart. The prisoners, led by Bartlett, organize an escape of a numerous number of prisoners; two hundred and fifty prisoners. This becomes successful as they manage to construct a tunnel that will allow the passage of the huge number out of the confined place. Their plan succeeds and they manage, through the tunnel, to escape in large number from the prison.
