? Power and Youth Unemployment Introduction Youth and unemployment are two things that go hand in hand in the 21st century. Unemployment can be defined as a state where a person is without a job. Unemployment alters one’s memory in that one’s expectations are brought to a halt. It is obvious that when a person is employed one can be able to decide what he/she wants with his/her life. However, those without jobs are unable to provide them with basic needs thus calling for help from their guardians. This also affects their memory as well as their lifestyles. Being employed is a spectacular thing because one will fulfill his/her dreams. According to statistics released by BBC, the rate of unemployment is increasing rapidly. This results agrees with the findings from the Office of National statistics. The results gave an estimate of 115000 unemployed youth who are between the age of 18 and 24 years. On the other hand, economists have termed unemployment phenomenon as generation joblessness. This phrase has been used to illustrate how young people live with no source of living. Warnings such as the charity named the ‘Prince’s Trust’attracted the government’s attention because the forecast had revealed that many of the youth may remain unemployed throughout their lifetime. As a popular issue in the recent times, unemployment has not invented into the modern society, it is only a fact that it attained much popularity. Unemployment has been announced as one of the serious social problems which improving continuously, unemployment has flooded the media and to an extent paradoxical. For example, in September 2013, British Premier termed Britain as turning the corner after the rate of unemployment reduced thus reducing the rate of job seekers from 2009. Considered a spectacle, criticism of unemployment has been heard from various aspects. The government has been criticized for its inability to create jobs for the youth. Spectacle is not only a collection of images but also a social relationship amongst the mediated people. This sort of idea is seen as extraordinary and distinctive even as lodge in memory, which has a political role. Unemployment has negative outcomes in a carnival where mass emotion is liberated. During this negative event, the mob only watches without doing anything having an illusion of self-participation when engaging public issues. Exposure to mass media will help the mob realize that they have a role to play in history building, such as the ancient Rome’s “brad circuses.” Unemployment has affected the youth in that they lack real sense of control since they do not have any power to control the society. Additionally, power and memory joint to spectacle is applicable when analyzing the issue of youth unemployment. On the contrary, employment is considered to work in a situation where unemployment is experienced, as only when a counter discourse in operation can discourse exists. In a context of youth employment, the increased rate of youth employment in British grandaunts is basically those who have attained A-level in their education. It is imperative that majority of the unemployed are a group of youth who did not manage to attain good education qualifications to secure themselves good jobs. Therefore, this is a worrying phenomenon to the British economy mainly because the qualification of workers will even affect those who are qualified to secure a job. In a case where modern conditions of production prevail, the entire life is seen as an accumulation of spectacles. Currently, the products are increasing everyday due to increase in the cost of production. What is portrayed from every element of life is the fuse in a common stream where unity of life can no longer be re-established. Life is no longer favorable to the unemployed, because the cost of production has increased to a situation that they have been isolated in the society. Spectacle therefore is termed a collection of images but a social relation among people mediated by images. Unemployed youth ought to change their social class. During the teenage state, one can be able to interact with all the social classes. The cause of unemployment to the youth waiting to be employed in the field where one had specialized in only to realize their memory was not right. Instead, the youth should have engaged in other income generating activities instead of lying idle and waiting to be called for an interview. It obvious that when a person is employed one can be able to decide what he/she wants with his/her life. Good governance is realized when majority of the public are satisfied with what the government is doing. In some cases a government may affect the lives of its constituents positively vice versa may also be true. Good governance is realized when the government can work hard in order to ensure that its citizens are able to get jobs either in the government sector, or private sector. In doing so, the government will earn more through taxes from the employed citizens (Burghes 2007). The main causes of unemployment globally is rural to urban migration in search for jobs, the rural areas are lest fallow. The youth are more interested in formal employment that the informal one. Youth across the country are moving to cities. Since job demand is low they end up being unemployed for a longer time. The second cause of unemployment is the rapid growth of population. Children are born daily yet jobs are at stunted growth. The number of students in colleges is graduating every year and the job market out there is already saturated. Thirdly, the level of education of people who were employed earlier may have outdated due to rapid change in technological innovation thus rendering them irrelevant in their place of work. Leaders use this phenomenon as a tool of accessing power. They also feel that by ascending to power is a spectacular thing to do. For instance, the unemployed individuals will do anything as long as they are compensated. During campaigns, politicians use youth unemployment to their advantage. Some employ youth who are desperate for money to cause violence in places where their support is minimal. The memory of unemployed youth has turned into political thugs who are ready to kill in order to please their master. Influential politicians use unemployed youth to destabilize government moves such as security and financial policies which politicians view it as killing the politically. Unemployed youth is similar to a fool who can be manipulated at all times so long as little money is paid to their accounts. Politicians can utilize unemployed youth in order to use them to perpetuate clashes across tribes, religion, and race. Youth unemployment acts as a tool that separates the rich from the poor. Youth are at their active stage of productivity. They are perceived to work so as to begin investing before getting old. However, the job market can no longer provide the required number of jobs that the youth demand. The youth are faced with a reality that they are jobless. During this time, the youth will consider changing their social class. How media improve unemployment Media is regarded as a reservoir of information. Media in this case refers to radio, television, magazine, journals, internet, and other forms of communication. Culture on the other hand has been known to play a role in reducing unemployment. Some of the way in which culture help curb unemployment include; when youth participate in cultural activities such as music, dances among others creates job opportunities to the youth. Culture instills skills and self-confidence to the youth. Youth can also learn to work in teamwork thus acquiring interpersonal and other transferrable skills (Bibby 2008). In engaging in cultural activities, one will gain self-esteem and identity. This will encourage youth to participate in society and labor market hence consolidating a focused sense of identity for other numerous groups who are prone to more risks such as the physically impaired, emotionally disturbed among others. Culture in itself is a job opportunity to the willing. Local projects, for instance drama workshops encourage youth to concentrate on them. Youth who are brought up in a cultural background will have good morals (Wagner 2000). In this case, therefore politicians will not use them as tools for personal gains. Moral decay and unemployment put together is quite toxic to the employed reason being that the few employed individuals may not have a good chance to invest because the unemployed will be threatening them to pay them security levies otherwise they will avenge. Media creates a good platform where individuals can access to job vacancies. People in power will work day and night to ensure that youth do not get access to job vacancies but the media platforms have increase; politicians and other influential individuals will not be able to prevent them from being employed (Vaile 2010). Good Communication skills helps people easily access what they need. Job applications through the internet are categorized under media. A good letter is one with uses good language not demanding. The media, communication and culture can shape or convert unemployment into employment opportunities. The three are employment opportunities if the youth put them into consideration. For instance, if one has been active in cultural activities, he/she will be able to communicate in a good language thus being employed will be employed without any difficulty. Those against youth employment can reduce if the three elements are all put in place. There are numerous examples where unemployment has caused many losses to the government machinery. According to Bibby, J P (2008), the unemployed youth caused a lot of havoc to the government in the year 2001 during an election. Politicians used the advantage of unemployment to gain to power and spectacle. According to his research, leaders paid the youth to cause chaos in a place where there seem to lack support. Additionally, the same politicians assigned another group of youth a duty to move around the villages shouting the name of their master yet the pay is very little and the risks attached to it is very high. In a case where some of the youth are injured in the process, the politician will dissociate himself. In the same country last year, youth were in the record to have engaged in a religious war. Religious leaders in sighted youth to fight for their rights religiously and that their religious rights had been infringed. Religious leaders are also categorized as among the influential leaders in the society. It is quite ironical for such leaders to engage in a dirty game in public. They may not be on the front light fighting for the rights but are responsible for planning the act. With the presence of media, the youth should have been aware on the consequences of engagement of this sinful act. It is clear that most of the youth died due to ignorance. Culture teaches morals in the society. Youth should be close to the elders in order learn good morals. People with different religious backgrounds co-exist. It is therefore upon an individual to focus on the way they communicate to one another in order to reach at a mutual understanding. It is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Youth who are unemployed are fond of engaging in bad things. Media too is partially good. Incitement in the media such as facebook and twitter among other media platforms can mislead the youth (Bell 2000). There are channels over the radio and television, which incites. It is the responsibility of every individual to filter what is good to be consumed. On the contrary, there are other sections of youth who are unemployed yet they do not participate in sinful activities. Moral decay and unemployment put together is quite toxic to the employed (Knight 2006, p.100). This is because few employed individuals may not have a good chance to invest because the unemployed will be threatening them to pay them security levies otherwise they will avenge. This group of youth is mentally upright and that they have stick to the culture which talks about morals.
