?Communication Table of Contents Definition of Communication 3 Verbal Communication 5 Non-verbal Communication 6 Relationship and Communication 7 Conclusion 9 References 10 Introduction Communication plays a crucial role in human life. Through the assistance of communication, individuals can intermingle with others and contribute for the improvement of their relationship and also to their personal skills. From the realistic point of view communication process is mandatory for human beings, as it increases the cognitive skills through the development of interaction between two people. This paper focuses on providing a detailed definition of the communication process, verbal and non verbal communication along with the role played by communication in enhancing the relationship between peoples. Definition of Communication Communication is defined as “a process of sharing facts, ideas, opinion thoughts and information through speech, writing, gesture or symbol between two or more person” (Business Studies, n.d). But in general point of view, communication is the procedure of interacting with peers. The procedure of communication enables sharing of ideas, thoughts and feeling. Every day human beings interact with their families and friends that provide them with significant opportunities to share their feelings, perceptions, desires and other personal with other but it would have been impossible without communication. Hence, it can be stated that communication is one of the most apparent and essential processes and is integral to the human life (Buffalo State University, n.d.). Figure: Communication Process Source: (Samovar, 2009) Process of communication consists of four major components, i.e. sender, message, receiver, and feedback which are processed through verbal and non-verbal means. For instance, communication can take place both through verbal and non-verbal modes of communication such as mouth in verbal procedures and visual, aural and gesture in non-verbal procedures. Sender is the person who transmit message, receiver are those who receives message from the sender. Messages enclose facts, feelings and ideas of the sender. The process ends with feedback that contains receiver’s responds and reply to the message sent by the sender. Through the assistance of feedback, sender can identify the receivers’ reaction level (Steinberg, 1995). Communication process is also affected due to the existing barriers which are of two types, i.e. internal barrier and external barrier. Internal barrier generally comprises poor listening ability, lack of attention between the parties, mistrust, and personal problems. External communication barrier can be ensued during bad connection in the phone, network problem, and noise (Samovar, 2009). Therefore, it can be stated that communication has made human life imperative. Verbal Communication Language is one of the vital requirements for the communication procedure. Communication processed with the help of words is recognized as verbal communication. In the prior description it has been notified that verbal communication contains two procedures oral and written communication. During Verbal communication or oral communication one party sends message to another party, through speech. If the listener and speaker can comprehend with the each other than the process of verbal communication can achieve success (Business Studies, n.d). Figure: Process of verbal communication Feedback Source: (Buffalo State University, n.d.) Verbal communication takes place through the above procedure. Speakers first encode the message through the proper channel. Verbal communication channel can be telephone calls and face to face interactions. After encoding the message, decoding process is done and the messages are transmitted to the listener. Feedback is the opinion of the receiver as conveyed to the sender. Through this process listener responds and the speaker can recognise the other party. Thus, communication can be stated as a continuous process taking place in the daily life of human beings (Cengage Sites, 2009). Non-verbal Communication Nonverbal communication is used to convey messages through body languages, facial expression and other modes. From a generalised point of view, communication refers to the process of interacting with the help of verbal phases. But non-verbal communication is a process through which one can exchange messages without speaking or writing as in the case of verbal interaction. Few noteworthy examples of non-verbal communication channels are gestures, postures, and symbols (Riggio & Feldman, 2005). Non-verbal communication can be processed with the following apparatus, body aspects, proxemics, appearance and eye contact. While communicating with the people body movement can designate masses of words. Body aspects comprise movement of heads, shoulder, eyes, orientation, hands and lips. Through this body aspects people convey message with others. Proxemics is another example of non-verbal communication channel. It is the space allocation between the two parties. Proxemics emphasises on the relationship between communicator and the listener (Kruegger, 2008). Therefore, non verbal communication does not require words but it is essential to recognise the people with the aid of appearance. To be illustrated, in the interview section candidates are usually observed by their physical appearance. Eye contact is also another way to conduct the non verbal communication. There is a very common saying that “eye is the window of the mind”, and it can be easily demonstrated with the assistance of eye contact. For instance, the people who use eye contacts are widely remarked as confident (Gabriel & Raam, n.d). Relationship and Communication Human beings are communal animals those require communication for living in the society. This rewards the human beings with the opportunity to interact with the other members of the community quite frequently. It is in this context that good communication creates successful bonding in both personal and professional existence of an individual. As stated by Kruegger, (2008), communication is an essence of the human life. Through research it has been found that people communicate more with the nonverbal communication than through the verbal process (Kruegger, 2008). Communication of general people and organisations are quite distinct from each other. Human being communicates to share the feelings and ideas. But there are two ways of organisation communication namely container approach and social constructionist approach. Container approach defines the transmission of message with the help of channel to the receiver. For instance, it includes organisational structure and hierarchy. Social constructionist approach identifies the shapes and the forms of the organisation. Therefore, application of proper communication process can provide competitive advantage for an organisation (World Bank, n.d). It is worth mentioning that both verbal and non-verbal communication processes comprise of a few limitations in their realistic practices which also depicts the differences existing between the two forms of communication. For instance, verbal communication takes place in the written form which can be recorded but it is impossible to record the non-verbal communication. People while interacting with the non-verbal modes of communication can identify the human percepection and their physical appearance but it cannot be done with the verbal communication (Jones & LeBaron, 2002). Communication is the process of transferring of thoughts and ideas from one intellect to another. Proper communication requires cooperation between listener as well as the communicator. Verbal and non verbal communication had affected a lot in the human’s existence. Usually, non-verbal communication creates feeling during the verbal communication. For instance, kinesics, vocalic and environment communicates messages which are mostly non communicable through verbal interaction. With the assistance of non verbal communication people can express their feelings, emotions and anger to other persons (Business Studies, n.d) Conclusion Communication is conveyed through the reciprocated understanding of the human beings. Meaning obtained through the communication procedure subsists in the mind of human beings. Therefore, human minds share meaning and ideas to another person through communication (Cengage sites, 2009). Communication is the essence that tends to influence the human life as a social being. It is fundamentally because through communication skills humans can interact with others and thus share their ideas. This in turn has been stated to reduce the level of stress within the peoples and also enhance their personal cognitive skills. It is worth mentioning that communication has emerged to be a continuous and regular phenomenon which is quite essential to foster the social life of a person. It is due to this reason that communication is being considered as a vital aspect in social as well as economic life of a person (Steinberg, 1995). References Buffalo State University, No Date.
